FIRST ON CNN: Iran confronts U.S. drone over Persian Gulf

. .
"They have done this before. We are fully prepared to defend our aircraft. We were definitely in international airspace," one of the officials said.

If you where in "international airspace" so was iran.......whats the problem?

.
And Genius what do u think happened when iranian scramble jets to kill the drone ?

They likely would not. You can't attack assets in international waters and expect no retaliation. The soviets were a bit more up front about this.

The planes were a visual deterrent. Showing airpower presence.

First,Iran did what's right to do and also,we were in international waters too when confronted the predator. But no clashes happened,so Iran can not be blamed here.
Second, you don't send your drones and jets few miles away from a country you consider as 'enemy',then claim you are innocent and you were in 'international waters'.We all know what's the purpose of these drones.
One RQ-170, 2 Scan Eagles, few RQ-11 ravens and possibly more drones.Aren't they enough to prove that U.S doesn't have any good intentions here?

.
whats the purpose of drones if they r escorted by jets?? i think sending jets for reconnaissance is better

And Y do we always think American are telling the truth ? Y do we truth them so blindly ? They killed millions on a fake news of WMD in iraq and there are many more instance when they lie just for their own interest .

Iran downed many American drones which are flying in its range . No one is coming out of the way to shoot down those drones.

I was just pointing out that the US would not hesitate to shoot down an Iranian aircrat if they ventured near its assets in international waters. The US can do this and get away with it lik the Soviets did with KAL 007.

International waters makes the US look innocent. Shooting an Iranian aircraft down over Iranian airspace would be bad press.

Not only jet fighters, but U.S is also very good at shooting down civilian airlines in international waters and not only get away with it, but also giving medal of honor to captain who gave this 'couragous' order to burn 300 people alive in the sky. So,we obviously know who we are dealing with.

.
After shooting down several US unmanned aircraft in its territory, Iran has reasons to be concerned and cautious. USA must not interfere in Iranian airspace and Iran did right not to fire at American Drone when it was in internal airspace.

.
Genius....... Escorting MQ-1 with fighter jets............
Your lack of military experience is evident and the laugh is on YOU:omghaha:

You probably have the impression that an escort must always fly right next to its charge. Wrong. In this situation, the Iranian fighters never seen the UAV's fighter escorts. The Iranian fighters came within 16 miles of the UAV and he was verbally warned. That mean the Iranian pilots never knew they were being watched/hunted until they were given a verbal warning, which could have been a couple of missiles. That also mean the UAV was probably a ruse to see Iranian response, which was pretty pathetic considering the Iranian pilots never knew they were being watched/hunted.

Try to put yourself in the Iranians' place: So focused on a UAV and all of sudden, you hear an American voice telling you to frack off. You frantically turns your head all over to try to find what is clearly an opponent but alas, you could not.

So who is going to have a good laugh at the bar at the end of the flying day? The Americans who scared the crap out of the Iranians? Or the Iranians who were so fixated on a UAV that they got busted by a disembodied voice in their headsets?

@gambit: can a fighter jet itself do the job of Drone to which it is protecting ???
If yes why risk a drone for that ???
I don't think US will do that just test the response from other side. Response is known in a lot previous things.
I don't think even US want the situation to escalate. Any trigger happy Iranian or American can start a wild fire in such situations.

No. Technically speaking, these are not drones but Un-manned Aerial Vehicles (UAV). Un-manned does not mean not piloted. A drone is both un-manned and not piloted. A UAV is remotely piloted and also have a high degree of autonomous programming like a drone, if not more sophisticated.

Anyway...These types of aircrafts are generally designed for slow speed, higher than normal altitude, and long duration in flight. The slow speed is conducive for photography/video of superior resolution -- crucial for details. A jet fighter for recon is not new -- RF-4. And this type of aircraft is best for really hostile air space that require the dash capability of an afterburner engine.

I use Drone generally but I mean UAV.

Fair enough but can you explain what these UAVS are looking for which a satellite can ???
Means US has a big number of such sats. Why risk going near hostile airspace when you can look right inside it ??? I think there won't be much difference in both things or is there ???
