Monsieur, I was not aware that the MEKO with the signature reduction was operational yet. Only aware of the ANZAC type frigates.

However, it still does bring it back to the point that only a few frigates have the true signature reduction measures out of the many supposedly using shaping or flat surfaces for RCS reduction.

You are quite correct in the info that you have provided in this and the earlier post. Of the measures to reduce the three aspects of signatures; reducing RCS is one of the most finite, unless there is a drastic change in design as exemplified by the Zumwalt design for instance.

The other aspects have more scope; and as you aver, the Shivalik, Kolkata and Kamorta share some of those measures. Many of the measures are less visible though they have been the topic of discussion in numerous papers.

Well, just so you guys know...Prasun Sengupta has clarified his version that P-15A is indeed designed to carry 64 x Barak-8 SAMs. 32 in ready-to-fire mode in the VLS cells and another 32 stored in canisters inside the ship for reloads.

16 x BrahMos ASCMs
64 x Barak-8 SAMs
4 x AK-630M 30mm CIWS
1 x OTO/Melara 76mm SuperRapid cannon
4 x heavy torpedo tubes

Quite a mean punch, even without the originally envisaged 100mm main gun and
Barak-1 close-range SAMs. It seems IN has full faith in Barak-8 (aka Barak-2) itself being capable of handling
both long-range and close-in sea-skimming targets.

In terms of sheer firepower, the Kolk is easily among the best DDGs of the world.

It's not clear when Barak-8 will be installed.

The ship won't be going to AAW deployments till it gets it's full compliment of missiles. Furthermore it's
main role in future will be to escort the IAC-1/INS Vikrant CBG, which itself won't arrive till 2017-2018.

I beg to differ on that point. Signature reduction in multiple areas has had the attention of the Royal Dutch navy, starting with Doorman class M-frigates. Increasingly common are: shaping, use of RAM, shock and vibration free engine mounting, noise dampening engine covers, exhaust cooling. See also Singapore's Formidable class. Take note of the following:

Barak 8 has a length of about 4.5 meters and weighs 245kg..... do you see manual reloading of the VLUs take place at sea?
IF any reloads, THEN Barak-1 (Weight, 98 kg. Length, 2.1 m)

I see no area of differing in that. The Singaporean ships are also derivatives of the La Fayette. Hence my statement "few frigates have the true signature reduction measures out of the many supposedly using shaping or flat surfaces for RCS reduction.".

Reloading is to be done with support of Fleet replenishment vessels which are supposed to get dedicated cranes for
lifting out the spent canisters and loading the new ones. This was stated by a defence analyst here : Blogger: TRISHUL - Post a Comment

@Penguin I wonder if they'd implement an on-board reloading crane as there on the Arleigh Burke-class :

The VLS is split between the bow area and the stern area of the ship, with a 29-cell unit at the bow, and a 61-cell unit towards the stern. The VLS cannot really be seen on a profile (side) view of the ship, since it rises only a few inches above the deck. Missile launch chambers are beneath the deck, in a vertical position (hence the name), and are arrayed in a large grid. The foreward grid is really thirty-two squares large and the aft sixty-four, but three cells both foreward and aft are taken up by cranes, which facilitates reloading of the Vertical Launch System.

The Universal VLS cell system is something we need to get on with ourselves, saves real estate, packs in more punch. Sigh, someone at the NDB should take note of how others are operating.

@Penguin Any idea as to why the vessel seems under armed for its displacement? Apparently no Barak-1s will be going on board this ship at all, period, only the 8s will feature.

They say there's gonna be 64 Barak-8s in all, 32 ready to launch in the cells and another 32 stored internally for
reloads.
