Chinese delegation sent to Russia to discuss stealth fighter engine

A Chinese delegation was last month sent to the plant of the Moscow Machine-building Production Association, a Russian engine manufacturer also known as Salyut or Salut, to discuss cooperation on the development of the engine for the Chengdu J-20, China's first stealth fighter, the Hong Kong-based Wen Wei Po reported on Nov. 11.

The visit of the Chinese delegation was first reported on Salyut's official website on Oct. 31. The delegation was led by Xu Qiliang, the vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Communist Party of China, according to the company's website, and was accompanied by Sergey Shoigu, Russia's defense minister. Vladislav Masalov, the general director of Salyut, stressed the importance of Russia's cooperation with China in developing the new aircraft engine.

With the permission of the Russian government, Xu and his delegation was allowed to visit Salyut's workshop, engine testing facility, production line and museum. Back in 2005, representatives from Beijing signed a contract worth US$300 million with Salyut to purchase 100 AL-31FN engines. It was the largest sale for Rosoboronexport, the state intermediary agency for Russia's exports/imports of defense-related and dual use products, technologies and services, in 2005. By 2006, another contract was signed between Salyut and Shenyang Liming Aero-Engine Group Corporation to produce engines for Chinese aircraft.

As the Chengdu J-20 does not as yet have an adequate engine, it is believed by many experts in Russia that the fighter is likely to be equipped with the more advanced AL-31FM1. Wen Wei Po said that through investing with Russia in an engine plant, China will eventually gain the know-how it needs to design its own high-performance engines in the future. China isn't going to build an aircraft with no engines. We're not India.

We already know the J-20 is compatible with the AL-31 from these pictures.

Which means the J-20, at a minimum, should be able to utilize the WS-10 (as a stopgap) just like the J-11B and J-15. This is assuming the WS-15 is not ready yet.

The story sounds like another Su-35 fantasy that has been doing the rounds for years.

no need to drag us buddy..we built our engines and will continue to upgrade it..its just Kaveri will not serve as engine of Tejas,and thats it..while China yet to show their prowess in this sector,they're just in similar position like us.actually,we're in far better position.Modified Kaveri actually was enough to power Tejas,but GTRE refused to certify this modified engine as core of the engine was redesigned by another european company SNECMA..

most probably,USA offered us to co-develop a next gen engine with them(expected as they offered us to co-develop some high tech engines).also,as we're partner of Pak-Fa project,we will get all the details of 5th gen fighter jet engines..

but as this thread belongs to Chinese Engines,no need to distract it...

No country in the world would be stupid enough to give away the secret in this one of the most difficult areas of military technology to master.

Those so-called "insiders" from the CD forum are just bunch of amateurs and wannabes who pretend to be some sort of experts.

The insiders i believe are different from those "insiders" from the CD forum, i have tracked their record for many years, and their predictions are far more reliable than those "insiders" from the CD forum.

Now it's possible that we hit problems and we are in a worse situation than we thought, but at this point, I don't think the Russians will just sell it to us, especially since the Russian engines have problems too.

Even American engines are not perfect at this particular point and needs work, and the Americans has had the F-22 since 06.

So this story makes no sense, not only would we be unlikely to buy, but the Russians are unlikely to have an engine to sell.

i feel that MoUs and firm understandings between both countries in the sector of turbofan/jet engine development will have good implications for Pakistan

i'd like to see JF-17 Thunder re-fitted with even more powerful engines than the RD-93s
