China will name its first aircraft carrier "Liaoning" (遼寧) in honor of the province where it was retrofitted, the Southern Metropolitan Daily reported, citing an authoritative source.

The paper confirmed that officials decided to name the carrier to commend the province where it was renovated and repaired, thus Liaoning.

The carrier, often referred to by its original name Varyag, is a retired Soviet-era vessel that China bought from Ukraine in the late 1990s. The carrier was later harbored in Dalian, Liaoning Province, where it was retrofitted.

The vessel began sea trails in August 2011 and on September 3 received the side designation "16," prompting speculation that the vessel had completed basic trails and would soon be commissioned.

The carrier's name has been a topic of interest for some time, and many netizens opined that it was likely to be named after Shi Lang, a well-known general during the Qing Dynasty, or the former leader Mao Zedong, or even the capital city of Beijing.

However, according to Chinese naval designation regulations, vessels can only be named after provinces, cities, counties, mountains or lakes, and not people.

China will officially announce the name of the vessel after it has been commissioned.

(Thanks for Martian2 who is taking a temporary absent)

After ten successful sea trials the Chinese carrier, to be named Liaoning 遼寧 when commissioned in the near future, is ready to stake her claim on the South China Sea, a domain that's rightfully hers.

China sends patrol ships to islands held by Japan

The China Marine Surveillance has drawn up a plan to safeguard China's sovereignty of the islands and the ships were sent to assert those claims, said the Chinese government's official news agency, Xinhua. The marine agency is a paramilitary force whose ships are often lightly armed.

Carlyle Thayer, an expert on regional security at the University of New South Wales in Australia, said the sending of the Chinese patrol boats "ups the stakes."

"It's a tit-for-tat response because China is extremely sensitive about sovereignty matters," he said.

Japan's coast guard said it has not taken any special measures in response to the Chinese patrol boats although it continues to monitor the situation.

China also has announced coordinates marking out the waters off the Diaoyu Islands that it considers its territory, apparently for the first time after doing so earlier for the mainland and other islands.

The coordinates are another step, along with recent announcements of China's intention to use law enforcement vessels, to defend its sovereignty claim, said Stephanie Kleine-Ahlbrandt, northeast Asia project director for the International Crisis Group.

"It's primarily about being seen as taking action to pave the way for further actions to assert China's sovereignty," she said.

Good move one ship at a time and then back up by "Liaoning" 遼寧 when ready for actions.

It's just a name of the province, there's no special meaning. Should there be a meaning to city names?

it should be named something cute like " Panda " or heck even something cool like "Dragon"

still has a MADE IN CHINA STICKER on it no matter what name

The Panda?!? Yes, I am sure that will strike fear into the hearts of its targets. Oh beware of our mighty destroyer, The Fuzzy Panda!

I think literally the 2 words has their own meaning. Liao 遼 is a huge terrain, a wide expanse of land, -ning 寧 means peaceful, calm etc. Yes it is the name of the province in north eastern China!

In this case, it will be 'Assembled In China'. Remember, this ship was bought not even used but abandoned.

Well each separate character can have different meanings with or without combining with another character. But as mentioned in the article it's named after the area where it was retrofitted so i don't think too much about the meaning of words as there are many meanings attached to each character.

Liaoning is the name of a Province in northeastern China, bordering North Korea. The Great Wall begins or ends here where the land meets the ocean. It takes the name of Liao River, which transverses the province, and Ning means peacefully quiet.
