World Boxing Council (WBC) silver flyweight champion Muhammad Waseem has expressed his great disappointment over his financial position, saying he is seriously considering surrendering Pakistani nationality.

“I want to play for Pakistan but my financial position is compelling me to think of surrendering my nationality,” said the dejected boxer in a video message from Karachi, Express News reported.

“I may apply for the citizenship of Korea or the United States,” he added.

The 30-year-old Waseem went on to say: “I have been facing so many problems as don’t have a sponsor. I will soon take part in a fight for an international title and that may be my last competition for the country.”

When Amir Khan's brother Haroon Khan (won a bronze medal at commonwealth games) was given a hefty cheque by the Zardari govt during the time of 2010 floods I was sickened to the core, not only that a PIA jet was specially commissioned to VIP him out of the country to Britain, a country he was born and bred in and was begging to represent (he was beaten in British trials), Pakistani was strictly a second option yet here we have a far, far more accomplished boxer in Waseem yet not a damn thing done by any branch of the govt, why are they bending over backwards to fulfill any request by the Khans yet neglecting this young lion, a bloody shame indeed, Kudos and the best of luck Waseem bhai, long may your success continue in the most difficult sport.

Cricket zindabad ................

Though compared to any other sport cricket shouldn't even qualify as a sport (hardly any pain involved, hardly any stamina required) .......... but it has all those big stadiums built for it, leagues, money, fame and everything.

Waseem should be given extra charge of head of Pakistan Boxing Council, and remove the current head who made Waseem take the decision to leave Pakistan. Do the same with others sports.

I remember , wining a game with India . Government gave one crore to each player while completely ignoring the poor .
Cricket isn't that high game but we're giving unnecessary importance to it .

Organize football leagues instead of cricket. Less chance for corruption and betting. Better game, less time consuming and more interesting.

Pakistani nation needs to get out of its cricket obsession.

And if you do win a world cup/champions trophy in cricket, hardly anyone in the world knows or cares about it. Compare that with winning medals in the Olympics when the whole world is watching the medal table. Yeah just about says it all. Pakistan's obsession with Cricket is simply beyond me.

If I could I would find Pakistan a football team that would come as a shock to many around the world, and would meet the international standards with little time and coaching. But little can an individual in a country do where they have perfectly ruined the natural born talent for hockey. Waseem is not the only one and he won't be the last one ..... given our current thinking, conditions and governance.

And unfortunately that same cricket brought us a bad repute and fame abroad plus the depression of not seeing any sports happening in Pakistan at all. All the effort went into restoring international cricket ........
