Bangladesh will attend an extraordinary summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Istanbul on Friday, which will discuss a response to the recent opening of the new United States embassy in Jerusalem.

The OIC has termed Monday’s unveiling by the US as a "clear violation" of international law and legitimacy, and in “clear contempt of the international community's position regarding Jerusalem”.

The decision to organise the special summit was announced by Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan as part of his country’s rotating chairmanship of the 57-member body.

"The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation strongly rejects and condemns in the strongest terms this illegal decision by the US administration," the OIC said in a statement.

Bangladesh Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's security affairs adviser, Maj Gen (retd) Tarique Ahmed Siddique, will join the summit, a senior official at the foreign ministry told UNB on Wednesday.

Bangladesh has already expressed its dismay at the US move to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, and stressed on preserving the legal status of Jerusalem as an international city within the framework of relevant UN resolutions.

"Bangladesh reaffirms its position in favour of establishing the State of Palestine on the basis of two-state solution and on the pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital," the Bangladesh Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Bangladesh has also strongly condemned the use of deadly force by the Israeli authorities which killed scores of Palestinian protesters and injured several thousand others on Monday.

While expressing deep condolences and sympathies for the Palestinians, Bangladesh called on the international community to put pressure on Israel to stop the atrocities “immediately”.

Turkey has also strongly condemned the US for opening the embassy in Jerusalem, and Israel for "committing a massacre" against the unarmed Palestinian civilians.

Because Israel and the Palestinian Territories both consider Jerusalem to be their capital, the US embassy in Israel had always previously been situated in Tel Aviv.

That was until US President Donald Trump announced the decision to move the country’s diplomatic mission to Jerusalem last December, calling it “a long-overdue step to advance the peace process and to work towards a lasting agreement”.

In doing so, the United States now officially recognizes the Holy City as the capital of Israel.

The OIC said it considers this action to be an attack on the historical, legal, natural, and national rights of the Palestinian people, which undermines the standing of the United Nations and rule of international law and thus represents an affront to international peace and security.

This position was expressed at the Extraordinary OIC Islamic Summit held in Istanbul on December 13, 2017, and also by the international community at the UN General Assembly held on December 21, 2017.

Serving as the OIC term president, Turkey had initiated an Extraordinary Summit of the OIC in Istanbul in December in a bid to protest the US decision, which it said was in violation of the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions.

Erdogan had phone conversations with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas late on May 14 in order to discuss recent developments in the region.

Alongside diplomatic efforts, Turkey will also hold two mass events in a show of solidarity with the people of Palestine, Turkish media reports.
