DHAKA: Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday opened 50 new mosques across the country to celebrate 50 years of independence.

They are part of a major $1 billion construction program that started in 2017, with 560 “model” mosques featuring community and educational facilities being built to serve as local religious and learning centers.

Hasina opened the 50 mosques virtually from her official residence, Ganabhaban in Dhaka, and expressed hope they would help restore the good image of Islam and root out extremism.

“We’ve seen how some people turn to terrorism in the name of religion. Killing people and spreading hate have tarnished the image of Islam,” Hasina said. “Everyone, including politicians, civil societies and teachers, need to work together to root out terrorism. People need to understand that no one will go to heaven by killing others.”

Another 50 mosques will be opened in the coming months to reach the 100 mark in remembrance of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the country’s first president and Hasina’s father, as Bangladesh is also observing his birthday centenary this year.

Rahman spearheaded a freedom struggle in Bangladesh to separate the country from Pakistan. The war began in March 1971 and, after a bloody nine-month campaign, culminated in the nation’s independence.

Shafique Talukder, the mosque building project’s deputy director, told Arab News that the mosque complexes would all have facilities for Islamic research, pre-primary school education, libraries, housing and accommodation for local and foreign tourists. They would also run enrolment and training programs for Hajj pilgrims, he added, and serve men and women.
Three types of mosques are being constructed under the project.

There will be mosques with a floor space of 2,400 square meters in 64 regions. In 475 other areas they will have a floor space of 1,700 square meters. In 16 coastal regions the floor space will be 2,000 square meters, designed specifically to meet terrain requirements.

The aim of the project is for all districts, subdistricts, and city corporation areas to have one model mosque equipped with a grand prayer hall for 900 to 1,200 people.

“This is the largest mosque building project being implemented by any country in the world,” Talukder said.

There are more than 300,000 mosques in Bangladesh.

Government Documentary on Bangabandhu as the leading figure to promote Islam in Bangladesh prior to opening ceremony of the 50 model mosque:

I would have preferred the establishment of 100 new industrial units where people can work and produce wealth for the nation.

The Christian developed world would certainly cherish we spend less time on works and more time on prayer mats.

The Christian world is now celebrating that without new wealth created in industries we will keep on borrowing their (read Jewish) money and will fall right into their Debt Trap.

Joy Bangladesh!!!

For that speaking up against Islamophobia is the way to go..

I will be called out for this but I think these concerns about Islamophobia are very dumb. It exists because of what has happened in the past, and what is happening.

If we root out extremism and corruption, it will create positive social development in our communities and its effect will be seen in rest of the world. Islamophobia will root out itself once we fix our problems.

Right now, we live in continuous denial of reality. While terrorist organizations exist using the name of religion, and continue to manipulate people using religious texts, and get recrutees from our countries, we are busy trying to appease our religion to pacifists instead of clamping down on our against those terrorists, and educating people so they don't carry extremist values.

You are ridiculous... There is no such thing as changing your own ways the islamophobe wants you death he doesn't care about extremism or what not they just want you death... You have to confront it head-on and subdue it there is no other alternative to it... There is no place for apologetics and there is nothing to be apologetic about... We are known to be the most unapologetic we won't change that for anyone....

Islamophobia is the greatest thing that has happened to the ummah since the last century people were slowly leaving Islam but help came to us from an unexpected place this will return people to Islam as in reaction to Islamophobia and our golden age will return due to the consequences of that.. Sometimes your biggest help comes from an unexpected sources

Well if we want to grow this Muslim nation , yes we have to open up new industries and schools first.

Mosques can drive up education and foster social cohesion. There is a great opportunity to use the mosque network for social change and economic growth. We should really exploit the opportunities this represent.

Although I would say Bangladesh is mosque haven, a "mosque" is a not a bad thing and should not be viewed with a traditional mindset. Mosques are a hub for many things and if these mosques are built with the idea of being a tool for empowerment ie to help people in every way possible.

Those days are going slowly but surely, when kids wouldn't want to return to mosque because of beatings.

You are giving your personal opinion. But, I asked a Madrasa student. He is taught the Earth is flat and the Sun is moving around it. When I said, the Moon is moving away from our Earth at a rate of 3.8 centimeters (1.5 inches) per year, his plain answer was no religious book ever said about this phenomenon, so, how can I believe it.

Do you think this is education? We need secular education free from the ignorance of all or any religion. There must be a strict separation of religion and education. Otherwise, we will remain as mental pigmey as we have been for the last few centuries.

A scientific issue must be solved by scientific theory and practice, and not by religious dogma.

I refer to institutes such as IERA, give it a google. Mosques need to implement rationale, a good idea would be looking at mosques/organisations in the west who do the utmost in teaching Islam in a pragmatic manner whilst adhering to the holy book and shariah.

Such mosque organisations is what's needed in BD instead of your qaumi/fazil associated mosques in BD.

The person who was taught the earth is flat was taught by someone of delusion and subject to brainwash - that isn't normal. Islam is actually very logical. Refer to Shiekh Yasir Qadhi, Hamzah Tzortis etc. One to watch bhai.

Bravo. Well said.

Islamophobia exists because us Muslims are well past our glory days when we used to lead in science and innovation.
The only way to beat Islamophobia is to regain dominance. Education and innovation is the way forward.
Crying victim and blowing up will never earn respect if we don't get our houses in order.

This fascination of Muslim Countries to open Mosques escapes me. Unless these Mosques serve as houses of worship and education, there is absolutely no point in just spending money in building and maintaining these mosques. As Muslims, we can pray on any land anywhere out in the open sun as well. Use this money to build up your universities and hospitals.

Dhaka is known as the city of musjids. They are literally everywhere.

Muslims don't need more musjids. We need understanding of Islam. Education education education
It is the Awami way of pandering to maintain their grip on power. They do the same to Hindus. Unfortunately Bangladeshis are way too emotional about religion to be able to see clearly.
