. . . . .
Before Abrams was produced, US, Germany etc were also jointly developing a tank, but it didnt go through thus instead of developing the wheel again they borrowed a German gun.
Why do you consistently write empty sentences which don't give anything?

Edit in order not to pollute further

It is not acceptable for countries or citizens to see themselves as superior and ridiculous, but it can be frustrating for everyone to engage in unnecessary discussions so that only the number of comments increases.

In 2016 the Altay tanks was set to be ready in "18 months". It's 2020 and we are still saying it will be ready in 18 months....

This project isn't being handled correctly.

Turkey’s first indigenous battle tank production delayed

Turkey’s production program for its first new-generation main battle tank, the Altay, is facing delays, says the chair of Turkey’s Defense Industries Directorate İsmail Demir.

The 18-month production period is delayed because they have not yet obtained a power pack/engine from the foreign company, he said.

“If the application in the power pack does not result, the 18-month period for the production cannot start. We had 18 months publicly announced. At that time, we were waiting for a final application. This application did not currently encounter a positive or negative response; it’s pending,” Demir told reporters on Jan. 6.

Turkey is seeking an alternative supply of this equipment for the moment, but they aim to rely on indigenous production at the end of the day, he added.

The directorate contracted armored vehicle manufacturer BMC for the initial production of a batch of 250 Altay tanks. The Turkish government also provided the BMC a military tank production-maintenance factory in Arifiye.

Altay would be powered by a German-made engine and a German-made transmission mechanism. BMC planned to use these engines in the first prototype Altay tanks. However, Germany is reluctant to share technology with Turkey over political concerns.

Four power units were provided earlier, but this quantity was not enough for initial production, Demir also said. “We have four power packs from the prototype stage, but if we start the first party with them, opening a production line is impractical,” he stated.

The Altay project is Turkey’s first main battle tank development program, which includes electronic command and control systems, a 120-millimeter gun and armor, all of which will be made by Turkish defense companies.

Altay’s prototype of the tank was shown to the public at a 2011 defense show in Istanbul.

Don't you realize that Germans simple don't want to sell engines and transmissions if TR doesn't want to accept their restrictions? Some of those obstacles would be that TR wouldn't be allowed to use those tanks in Syria or Lybia or as I read somewhere they wouldn' t be allowed to use them at european soul at all! That would mean in case of a attack for e.g. at Istanbul TR army wouldn't be allowed to use them! Who the hell would be that stupid to build a tank, pay so much for engines and trans. and then accept such stupid restrictions from a "allie" and "friend"? It is 100 times better to wait till own solution is done and be able to use that tool how ever you want, build whole R&D industrie arround and spend the whole money domesticaly as to give it to such "friends". How stupid, blind or just treacherous one has to be to grumble about that again and again.

Who gives a f*ck about restrictions? Like honestly you're talking out of your a$$. Our leopards are also banned from being used in Syria. Who cares. Are you scared of European countries?

All This bullcrap European embargo crap is all because someone from Turkey made peace with PKK and thus ushered in a new era where peace with PKK is seen as plausible and preferable by European powers. Before the peace period they never had an expectation that Turkey would make peace with PKK. Therefore eventually they gave up and started working with us. But by making peace with a terrorist organization we lost all leverage and power.

First learn about that.

Then realize that the whole project has been slowed down by politicization and corruption. Seriously, grow a brain.

Also to make things worse BMC is removing a lot of the roof armor meaning that it will no longer have unique advantages over other tanks when it comes to surviving hits from above.

Oh well. Hope that engine gets completed ASAP. This has been going on for too long.

wasn´t the engine transmission always the achillies versus of the Altay since years?

Germany said right from start no MTU engines and Renk transmission...after that Turkey started a joint venture with a austrian company to develop a diesel engine for the Altay tank, later this joint ventrue was left by Austria for dead. Then there were talks with Ukraine to use one of their engines which were underpowered and unreliable.

Why they suddenly come up with Germany not willing to share engine and transmission...this problem was known since years...

I think the biggest Problem with the Altay Tank regarding the Engine and transmission can be solved, if they go to the Koreans and use the Engine for the K2 Black Panther, afterall there are many similarities with the Altay and the K2, as I have heard the south Korean companies behind the K2, helped in some aspects with the Altay. The First batch of the South Korean K2 Black Panthers used MTU MT-883 ka501 and used
RENK HSWL 295 TM transmission, this batch(100 tank) was produced between 2014-2015, but then South Korea produced its own engine Doosan DV27K for the second batch of tanks(106), which they started producing in 2019. They are now in phase three in which they intent to produce them with a fully indigenous powerpack, replacing the RENK transmission with a S&T Dynamics EST15K, this batch(about 54 tanks so far ordered) they intend to produce from mid 2020 going forward I believe.

This option for Turkey seems to be the best option, and the one with the least restrictions, if turkey orders a huge back of engines, many the south koreans will be willing to allow for a transfer of tech to help develop Turkey's own indigenous engine. Its really the only option outside of getting an engine in the EU, which will come with restrictions. The other option is a Ukrainian engine, which we dont know the quality of as Ukraine has not produced a tank of Altay's caliber and has not developed a new engine for a while, so their capabilities in this area are unknown..

edit: some more specs for the engine and transmission for the K2:

Engine:
Batch 1: MTU MT-883 Ka-501 4-cycle, 12-cylinder water-cooled diesel
Batch 2, 3: Doosan DV27K 4-cycle, 12-cylinder water-cooled diesel
1,500 hp (1,100 kW)

Transmission:
Batch 1, 2: RENK HSWL 295 TM (five forward, three reverse)
Batch 3: S&T Dynamics EST15K (six forward, three reverse, in development(expected mid 2020))
