What's new

Altay & Turkish Main Battle Tank Programs

When a company don't make his own product and do every thing to reach subsidy this is what happens. Ther is nothing more stupid to give a tender to one company. SSM is not that stupid, 10 years later we have still one company with zero R&D, another project give to otokar?

20 years later otokar come with Cobra2 when other companies join the club. Ssm head Ismail Demir told in a interview that they are involving more companies to the defence industry. That is the vision of Ssm, and nothing to do with political view.

Guys its stupid economically to produce it in two companies with probably two different qualities.
Its basic economies of scale.
That's absolutely and fundamentally wrong. For the sake of our defense industry, it is way better if two companies compete with each other in the future for innovative and new products. Two companies mean competition, faster deliver and a far more dynamic industry. I think @Legionaire preferred this option in the first place. Btw, where is he?

Besides, you as the contracting authority are the one that defines the quality standards in this project. The companies have to uphold commitments you set before the production starts otherwise you can refuse the acceptance of the specific product. This will not harm the tax payers but the companies.

Two companies are not enough to create a competition, little better then a monopoly: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duopoly

Having two companies producing the tank will increase the price per unit immensley. That would be a waste of ressources.
How many countries do you know with more then one tank manufacturer?

Should be given to 1 inci Ana Bakım Merkez Komutanligi and be over and done with :)

Koç Holding’s Otokar has completed a seven-year prototype development process and will commence the mass production of 250 Altay main battle tanks as soon as it receives approval from Turkish authorities, according to a top company representative.

“We completed the prototype development process in seven years in accordance with the vision of both the government and the Defense Ministry to meet their tank needs through domestic means. Otokar made the offer to start mass production. We are been waiting for approval and directives from the government, ministry and the Turkish Armed Forces,” said Koç Holding Vice Chair and Otokar Chair Ali Koç on Nov. 9.

Koç said the company completed all infrastructure planning and programming for mass production.

“As soon as we take a go, we will be able to start mass production in the following 18-22 months,” he said in a MÜSİAD press meeting at the High Tech Port in Istanbul.

Meanwhile, Turkey’s undersecretary for defense industries, İsmail Demir, told a news conference in Ankara that Turkey was in the final stages of evaluating a renewed offer from Otokar for its Altay tank project on Nov. 8.

Koç said the cancelation of the tender would extend the delivery of a domestic tank to the authorities by three or five years.

He also said the company had created a highly competitive tank both in quality and pricing in comparison to its counterparts.

“Otokar makes exports to 30 countries and works with 50 different entities … Our company has become known for making tanks,” added Koç.

Nop ! It’s not true. The benefits are much more numerous.

Virginia-class submarine

“The Virginia class is built through an industrial arrangement designed to keep both GD Electric Boat and Newport News Shipbuilding (the only two U.S. shipyards capable of building nuclear-powered vessels) in the submarine-building business. Under the present arrangement, the Newport News facility builds the stern, habitability, and machinery spaces, torpedo room, sail, and bow, while Electric Boat builds the engine room and control room. The facilities alternate work on the reactor plant as well as the final assembly, test, outfit, and delivery.

O'Rourke wrote in 2004 that, "Compared to a one-yard strategy, approaches involving two yards may be more expensive but offer potential offsetting benefits." Among the claims of "offsetting benefits" that O'Rourke attributes to supporters of a two-facility construction arrangement is that it "would permit the United States to continue building submarines at one yard even if the other yard is rendered incapable of building submarines permanently or for a sustained period of time by a catastrophic event of some kind", including an enemy attack.”
