What's new

45 More MiG 29K for Indian Navy.

dont forget that the nirbhay will also have an alcm version.......wont be bad to have a few for land attack from sea, roles.....primarily SEAD...in a hyptothetical war, a terrain hugging cruise missile could be used from long ranges.....to suppress anti air defences, or damage air force runways near karachi, in order to give the mig29 at least some semblance of air dominance....thing is, if the in operates tejas out of gujarat, then you can tie up PAF's resources in other tasks .....not that such a war should ever happen....just stating a 'what if' scenario...

The problem is, IAF will have Mig 29SMTs even closer to Karachi than a INs carriers might be, not to forget that IAF would add MKis and other strike fighters to attack to, so we don't really need SEAD or cruise missile attack capability for Mig 29Ks currently. That's why they are good enough for the present scenario with their A2A and maritime attack capabilities for the roles of Vikramaditya and IAC1 will be used for.

IN is also looking to acquire mid-air refuelling aircraft too, to extend range of platforms like Tejas &
MiG-29K maybe -

very good news

but the article is posted in 2012

I doubt navy will order 45 additional Mig 29 Ks, the current 45 are enough for both Vikramaditya and IAC 1

A three carrier force would need how many fixed wing aircraft?

45 Mig-29Ks is enough for the VIKY and IAC-1. It all depends on the size of the IAC-2, it looks more than likely that the IAC-2 will be 60-65,000+ tons as such will be able to carry 35-45 a/c as such the IN would need to induct probably ~60 more fixed wing fighters ie enough for 2 naval fighter SQDs, a flight-training/non-deployment wing (maybe 5-6 a/c) and the rest as war reserves.

The IN will also need 3-4 fixed-wing AWACs (E-2D looks likely).

If the 3rd carrier is 65K tons.. then around 50 more planes will be inducted..

Crucially it is expected the IAC-2 will be CATOBAR configured so the fighters won't be MIG-29Ks, the most likely contenders are the Rafale-M, F-35C and N-FGFA.

The way France is handling the ToT issue, I wont get my hopes high for Rafale.. N-FGFA or, even F-35 will have better chance if they continue with their antics..

Well that is neither here nor there IMHO. I think the bigger consideration is that we are looking at a 2022-5 induction of the IAC-2 and as such the Rafale being a 4th gen fighter is not really the best choice when the 5th gen/VLO threat is very real to India. India needs a next gen fighter on its next gen ACC as such the N-FGFA and F-35C can/should be the only considerations- ideally the N-FGFA.

E-2D would be a real force multiplier in every sense. With P 8I , MRMR & hopefully E 2Ds our carrier battle groups will be unrivalled Floating Fortresses. Looking forward to such a day.

will it be possible to persuade US government to pair EMALS with sale of F 35C which will be required for IAC 2's CATOBAR configuration if India decides to move away from steam catapult mechanism?
F 35C in anycase would be a great choice!

I think the general perception is that any sale of EMALS would be part of some sort of package deal with part of the Air Wing and certain other componats of the ACC being US-made.

While Indo US strategic ties have started to warmup recently by yardstick of diplomatic timelines, i suppose time has come for India to take the co-operation to next level.
Traditionally Russians have a stronghold on large ship segments for IN with French having small share. If India can persuade US to enter into a development agreement for a large AC after IAC 2 perhaps, we may get into hitherto unexplored technologies.
US is already pitching for F 35 C and here lies our chance to negotiate something larger. Marine Surviellance planes, AC based fighetrs, re-fuellers and may be submarines as well.
IN has huge budget and plans. If US can be convinced about IN patrolling IOR and keep the trade route running smoothly, Pentagon should have no qualms about IN's growing power.

A lot of what i've mentioned, could be wishful thinking but if we play our cards well, who knows whats in store in future.

Nope i think we should save money for indigenous stuff,,,,get good radars like mf-star from israel for the time being but put doublr effort in developing in house.

Drdo has been testing s-band aesa for awacs already and it should develop aesas for other platforms too and our forces should place firm orders regardless of the fact they will not be as good as imported ones initially but this step must be taken. So in terms of stuff like radars, sonars, atgm's,mission computers we must simply stop importing in a phased manner.

Regarding f-35c-------------------never

In case of aircraft carrier we should get all the help from anywhere possible
