Why we Indians need Joe here

Touche! His relative unpopularity is a badge of honor in my opinion.

I think that's how Joe sees it too, it is impossible to be an agent of change in a world rooted in festering tradition and be popular at the same time. Naturally, my criticism of the role of religion in Pakistan has also won me my own fair share of detractors but I have not the courage nor the words to be as open and articulate about it as Joe.

. .
@Joe Shearer judging from the response here, I'm thinking you should run for the next elections! Thanks @vsdoc for this much needed thread.
I have known Joe on this forum for almost 4 years now. We don't see eye to eye on a number of matters and we naturally feel that the other person is too defensive of his point when it comes to the national policy but I have the greatest respect for Joe because he is a rare kind of poster.
He backs his arguments up with cold hard facts, he is articulate and clear. A respectful poster and a fine gentlemen, he is among the first people who come to mind when I try to think of the people who I can have a meaningful discussions with on regional issues.
It is a sad state to see many Indians, his own kin, bully and attack him like this, a man much superior to them in age and experience and especially one who has contributed directly to their nation's development as a regional power. The Hindutva brigade in particular takes a particular dislike to him because he is not afraid to point out that India is deviating from its historical secularism, a point of pride for many and also a point that I am not entitled to speak about so I shall stop at that.

On a lighter note Joe, you once offered me to come to India and take up a teaching position. If things get any worse, I'll be waiting for your message and I'm sure there is no shortage of universities who would not want a man of your caliber to take the reigns of their Humanities and Social Sciences Departments! :p:

You're welcome any time, @Icarus ; you should take a look at Azim Premji University and at Asoka University. At Asoka, the Chancellor is/was a family friend, and the VC is a twerp a year younger (we can't stand each other! but there is respect - he is one of the foremost Indian historians). There are more. We can talk whenever you feel like it. I remember a similar conversation with @Elmo didn't get going properly because I knew so little about academics then; I know a wee bit more now.

Ashoka seems like a very reputable university. I'm surprised by their international connections!

They're fantastic. My s-i-l has spoken to them, and there may be a slot for him/them when he finishes his two-year stint at McGill. Their leadership is excellent too. Andre Beteille is the foremost sociologist in India today, and Rudrangshu Mukherji is a leading historian, not at the level of Sumit Sarkar, but still an eminence on his own.

PS: Don't overlook Azim Premji. The man is the Chairman of Wipro and a billionaire. The university is steadily building up strength, and most of my law faculty colleagues are very excited about the public policy group being built up there.

So the VERDICT is we DON'T need JOE here.......................... :enjoy:

Thank You Uncle for all your services both day & NIGHT.....time to bid FAREWELL!! :cray:

I am seeing way too much ganging up and hitting out at Joe guys.

I am reminded of the Moto GP race yesterday (and the past few)where the puppies are ganging upand snapping at the withers of the aging lion.

Why is Joe important for us?

He very articulately expresses the view of the far left. Of the liberal. The once communist. The atheist. The secular (no prefix attached). The religion hater. The Modi hater. The Hindu right wing hater.

We have no other like him who also happens to be a Hindu.

More importantly, for me, he's old school.

And we have no Indian babajee his age.

The Pakistanis have a few.

We have exactly zero left (Ray long gone) who can talk to them as a generational equal. And be taken seriously.

So please be respectful.

If he's old enough to be my dad, he's old enough to be most of your dadoo.

I detest greatly those low lifes who abuse him. A physical distaste.

Cheers, Doc

Sarcasm oozes out of this one.

Oh bhai jaan

@Joe Shearer is far from baba. He is true intellectual. and perhaps one of the most balanced analysts on both sides of our proverbial border.

So he should be admired and appreciated instead of being draagged into posts like this. Sorry to see.

Oh and add my bro scorp (@scorpionx) in the list of intellectuals too.

Peace

Generally only on seeing blow-up portraits of outspoken Indian women authors.

I am grateful to Doc for allowing people to say what they feel about my stupid and outdated attitudes, values and methods of work.

Not just any author.

I'm very picky.

And by the grace of the Almighty, have always been able to afford to be.

Err...unless I got it completely wrong, I think @Icarus was offering you a proposal in reverse.

They are both offering each other reciprocal nationality pehle aap pehle aap Laknawi istyle.

And in spite of 62 thanks I don't get so much as a multiple entry Visa.

Though to be honest, it might be the Exit I might have to work on more.

I'd be glad to go and teach. I wish I knew enough about teaching to have applied to LUMS when Adil Najam of All Things Pakistan was the VC. I'm happy enough with F***** M******, a genuine intellect and a canny administrator, but that would have been classy.

You just have to ask, Doc. And if you keep quiet, you don't have to worry about exit visas.

I was just about to write a post but saw this gem, i back every word @Icarus has written. A very fine Gentlemen, i have the utmost respect for our friend @Joe Shearer .

We don't see to eye to eye on many issues but this is the beauty of having a discussion with Joe. We get to bring our facts to the table, our reasonings and when we leave, we both are better informed. Although i am not an Indian Voter, but if i was, i would vote for Joe as the next President of India 8-)
