Why Pakistan Needs Language Laws

Should formulate a national education policy (NEP) on the same lines as in India.

Ghulam qom hain hum, na apni zaban hai na azadi.

Punjabi is the most pajeet of all languages spoken in Pakistan , at least Urdu can rely on its persisn flair. Need to have a clean break from the eastern border and its entrenched culture. Persian and/or Arabic all the way.

How about just each province just exercise its right under the 18th amendment and teach its own languages? Plenty of nations in the world are multilingual….the formula moving forward should be mother tongue + Urdu.

This idea that 220 million people are supposed to speak one language is ludicrous.

Should formulate a national education policy (NEP) on the same lines as in India.

Provinces are within their right to teach mother tongue in schools. Only Sindh has opted to exercise that right.

It really comes down to our own collective inferiority complex.

A lot of Pakistanis want ”English medium” because they still think speaking English like Apu from the Simpsons in going to land them a job.

Meanwhile, the average Japanese person can barely string together a sentence of English and look how far advanced that society is.

Even when I mention this to some rather “educated Pakistanis” they reply back with things like “but if we want to go abroad what will we do?”

The entire psyche of this nation is about wanting to immigrate….to the point where they want our education system to resemble a conveyor belt to the west.

Such a weird mentality.

So that there can be more division between people. Urdu is one of the things that unites the nation. If there's no national language then the chances of division between people rise exponentially. There's a reason why China made its entire population learn a standardized version of Mandarin. Most of China's coastal belt used to speak Cantonese and look at them now. The reason why India to a significant extent gets away with not having a national language is that they have forged a strong national identity by calling itself the "Indian Civilization" and they consider all South Asian civilizations to be part of its "Indian Civilization". Now let's compare China with India, currently, China has more unity than India can ever dream of, even when China was poorer than India, it was more united and having a single national language and a single culture dominate the entire country was an extremely important reason for that. We have an extremely weak national identity and without Urdu, it would be even weaker.

I cannot find the documentary having a title "China's Century of humiliation" or others. So, basically, Qing dynasty needed the same language in 15/16th Century. With its expansion, the language transferred.

We should force Pashtuns, Balochs and Sindhis to speak Punjabi

Punjabi supremacy ftw

Make Punjabi national language

( I don't speak Punjabi btw )

Who cares about East Pakistan... we are not living in the 1960s

I'm glad we don't have Bengalis with us

yea and have yet another revolt on our hands…to further separate this already broken nation.

Our intellectual qoum…

Maybe we should abandon urdu and all the regional languages for Arabic.

If you wanna larp as Arabs, atleast make it convincing

You just don’t get it do you…..

People like you are the reason why the world equates Punjabi language and Punjabi culture with Sikhs, despite them being the minority. The majority of Punjabis are Muslims and live in Pakistan, yet Shahmukhi is next to dead and Punjabi culture is dictated by Sikhs. Imagine if Pakistani Punjabis were the ones creating the pan-Punjabi narrative. Especially considering what’s been happening in Indian Punjab and to Sikhs of late in India.

People like you are the reason why the world equates Pashtuns and Pashto with Afghans, despite the majority of Pashtuns and Pashto speakers living in Pakistan. Again, you could be dictating the narrative since you’re the majority, but you handed that over to Afghanistan too on a silver platter.

Moronic but it gets worse.

Our education system is in shambles and one of the main reasons behind this other than a lack of funding and oversight is the rejection of mother tongues.

UNESCO and countless studies explain why the benefits associated with an education that takes into account children’s mother tongues:
  • Child learns better and faster in a language they can understand - this prevents delays in learning and preventing RATA/memorizing
  • They enjoy school more, they feel more at home
  • Pupils tend to show increased self-esteem
  • Parents participation is increased. Parents can help with homework and can participate in school activities.
  • When children take advantage of their multilingualism they may enjoy higher socioeconomic status, including higher earnings
  • On average, the schools perform better, reporting less repetition and less drop-out.

Part of the reason why Japan, Germany and Korea…and now China….have excelled is because they learn everything from Nursery to post-Secondary in their own languages. Simply learning things in English doesn’t make your nation a developed state.

Zimbabwe, South Africa, Kenya all have English medium education. Wow.

PS: East Pakistan was lost the day your military decided to play politics. Forget the violence of 1971, I’m talking about everything from 1947 until 1970. I’m still amazed the Bengalis stayed loyal to Pakistan for as long as they did.

Imagine thinking wanting basic communication so the average Pakistani is able to get a better education and is better informed is wanting to “sit on a high horse”.

Have you ever really wondered why the Pakistan Government and military still uses English? It’s because they don’t want the average person to know what’s going on.

English is a weapon of the establishment. Nothing more, nothing less. Having an illiterate population unable to understand what the elite are doing exactly what they want.

Go sit back down in the corner and come back when you have something valuable to add to this discussion.

Mother tongue isn’t under assault here. But the fact that Pakistanis need to get their priorities straight, which they never do. Hence the situation they are in today.

Bangladesh won fair and square in combined elections, but our politicians and military needed to have everything their way, from leadership to language. Forcing Urdu on them besides other election shenanigans started their drive the separation movement.

Care to learn history before you unleash the arrogance and stupidity inherited from our forefathers??

No thanks, I don’t suffer from inferiority complex…

I know it’s asking the Pakistani mentality a lot to concentrate on real and current issues facing the country but they have a habit of living in a fantasy land where the whole world worships their ways … and Urdu.

@Neelo. You have raised very good issues about how Urdu is being abused, and you've identified most of the reasons why.

The biggest problem is that almost everything in Pakistan is undeveloped. The economy is non-existent. Courts don't provide justice. Bureaucracy doesn't function. There's lack of education. Little or no healthcare. The political system is in shambles. Cities are falling apart. People are poor. I can go on and on. So we shouldn't be surprised that Urdu is in a mess.

The only thing that is is well developed, are DHAs in some cities. In Karachi even DHA is a stinking slum. They didn't even have storm water drainage. There's no piped water in normal times but when it rains the whole place gets flooded. My cousin's house has a basement that got flooded twice during rains.

So, everything is a mess in Pakistan.

The issue with Urdu is that the British Indian Army was trained in English and they've fanatically preserved it, just like they've preserved all other colonial traditions.

The Pakistani elite learned English and hang on to it. The 'Urdu' elite in Karachi are the most guilty as they insist on speaking English more than anyone else. It a ticket to moving to the West. The best Urdu that is spoken in Pakistan is in Punjab, especially Lahore.

There is also the issue of not everyone accepting Urdu wholeheartedly. Too many people still think that it's some kind of alien imposition on them. One argument used is that Pakistan can't progress scientifically if we don't use English. That a load of baloney.

It has been correctly pointed out that other countries run perfectly fine in their own language. There are probably 100 countries more advanced than Pakistan that do all science and technology in their own language.

Most university education in all subjects can be taught with 1,000 - 2,000 textbooks. It's not very hard to translate that many books into Urdu and have all university education in Urdu.

Every sort of solution to every problem has to wait until the time the British Indian Army is brought under control and Pakistan is run by legitimate, competent and decent people.

Yes it is. Shahmukhi Punjabi is on its deathbed. A majority of Pakistani can neither speak or write or read their mother tongue, can barely string together a sentence of Urdu properly and their English is embarassing.

Not sure why you’re telling me this.

I’m in favour of provinces teaching their mother tongues. Unlike some who have commented above, it would help unite Pakistan better.

But why do you care if people can speak and write perfect urdu or English? A common person in Pakistan has his mind dedicated towards next meal…

For Pakistanis, the nation built and fed 24/7 on conspiracies, everything, all the time is under assault. And people like you keep adding to the fire.

Oral Punjabi is diluted (thanks to Urdu's influence). Otherwise if you read traditional Punjabi in poetry and literature it is incredibly close to Farsi. Urdu has no history and culture. Its basically Hindi.

It's called literacy. Being literate is a basic tool to help you find a way out of poverty.

All the more why our languages should be taught in schools.

Urdu has 500 years of history.

Hindi was invented in 1881.

I am a punjabi. I love my language. It's beautiful. But I am all for Urdu supremacy. I don't mind it's the predominant language of another community. It's benefits far outweigh any harms. It's one of the biggest factors in national cohesion.
