China also has old metros, Beijing's first subway was built in the late 1960's during the Cultural Revolution, very simple, crude even primitive, but now they have all been retrofitted with screen doors.North American systems are old generation, and they evolved to ver time ..where as China and other recently developed countries did not have to though evolution. They on boarded directly into latest generation technologies. In US there is fiber optics laid down to every village few decades back ..but African countries skipped it and on 4G cell phones to have the level of phone service and with starlink optical fiber will be obsolete (May be?)
US SSA still runs on mainframes and software in cobol written in 1970s..
Who is trolling?

investigated the effectiveness of physical barrier installation in the prevention of incidents using an agent-based simulation model and found that installing physical barriers on subway platforms can effectively reduce 76% of passenger suicides.Isolated hate crime incidents are not a cause. Even if there were barriers, the culprit would have found a different way to dispense their hate….
Its common to not have PSDs in old systems, even in India the old metro systems don't have PSDs but the ones that were built relatively recently have them. It's not just in North America. Let’s look at some subways in capital/major cities elsewhere:
Neither does the Moscow metro
Neither does the London tube
Neither does the Rome metro
Neither does the Madrid subway
Neither does the Berlin subway
Neither does the Athens subway

You are missing the point…
Earlier it was hate crime and now you are taking about people with suicidal tendencies.
There thousands of ways a person can commit suicide, installing barriers will not deter a person that’s hell bent on ending their life…
Many factors involved, not just one, and why countries still install them? Beijing's subways used to not have them. You are missing the point…

Maybe that was the goal that made them essential in China?

What makes sense for China and other countries doesn’t need to make sense for the US…
