Why David Cameron apologising for Raj won’t mean much to India

Before British came there was Maratha Empire in most part of India, British first disintegrated it and then conquered whole of it. If you don't know our history, don't try to be smart.

That's just nonsense. How can you disintegrate something and put it back together. That's a laughable statement. India never had a centralised government before the British came and gave modern government with centralised control.

To weaken it, it was called doctrine of lapse.

What wealth did they steal?
They actually gave India a united nation. British colonialism was a blessing in disguise for India.

Don't be silly.

They looted millions of pounds from the country and put back a tiny fraction in investments. Their social and historical mistakes created gulfs and differences in Indian society which never existed before them. They left behind a legal system which is excellent and has no point of contact with the social, moral or ethical systems in the country.

It sounds like you are making a condescending statement for the sake of making one.

Britain was the sole reason that there is a country called India. Go ask the Sikhs, Tamils and all the others the British glued together.
Britain did not steal ANY wealth from India. India just welcomed the British and you guys were more than happy to be an honorary member of the British empire.
Stop making up things dude.

Again, another, even more silly statement. A little basic knowledge wouldn't harm you.

He is only trolling and is full aware of all situation but just for the sake of harterd against India he is writing all that. Ignore!

Does anybody have PM Cameron apologizing on video? This is a monumental time if a British PM is apologizing for the British Raj. Though I agree with one member who said it should be the Queen who officially apologizes.

Though apology is officially welcomed I suppose that certainly won't be enough, many of the artifacts in the British National Museum are stolen from around the world, specifically many artifacts stolen from Indus Valley.

Subjugation of Britain would be repaying them back in the same coin, apology is just a diplomatic overture.

Indians need to stop getting so emotional. All I said was Britain kept India happy for centuries which is why Indians didn't revolt. If Indians didn't like it, you would have revolted much earlier. India liked what Britain was giving you.
That's all I said.

Perfectly reasonable, if it was based on facts. It isn't, so all your post achieved was to irritate. On this, as on your ignorant assertion that there was no transfer of wealth, or that British rule brought unity rather than create fault lines which never existed before, you seem to be speaking from a simplistic account of Indian history from some seriously weird source, or you are twisting things to annoy people and watch the fun.

Unfortunately it also creates the impression of a thoroughly ignorant person making comments about a situation that he knows little or nothing about. A person who deserves neither respect nor attention.

.
Your laughing at women being raped (not cool to mock rape especially for an Indian) and comparing that to something India didn't mind being part of the british empire.
Japanese were ruthless savages which you seem to take pleasure in.
Britain didn't do that to India, they controlled your government but they gave so much to India. Any Indian that denies British contribution to Indian civilisation, your not being honest with yourself.
I'm not trying to insult you, I'm just saying as I see it.

This is again very shallow. British contribution to Indian civilization, in terms of culture and social practices, is practically nil. British contribution to India may be assessed in terms of systems; administrative systems, specially geared to exploit the country, political systems, intended to create an apparatus for dividing the burden of rule with Indians themselves, without much change in the objectives of government, educational systems which did not mesh with Indian social systems, legal systems which completely ignored the realities they were surrounded by, and transport and communications systems which worked very well.

How does this add up to what you seem to have seen? Wherever you have seen it?

What do you mean differences never existed before the British. Of course it didn't, because India never had a centralised government. The Sikhs were ruled by the Sikhs. Tamils were ruled by the Tamils. India as you call it now was many small independent kingdoms before the British conquered each of them one by one and centralised the entire land and called it India.
Remember pakistan and Bangladesh were part of this greater union but they broke away.
Same thing the Sikhs wanted in 1984 and so did the Tamils.
What you call India now is because of Britain. That's why India is so diverse, it's like making the entire European continent a single country. Or like the USSR, where many countries were united into a single country called the Soviet Union.
That large size made it strong, once they broke up, they are weak because they don't have size.
What Britain did helped India as now India is strong as a single country instead of broken into many different smaller countries.

Again, like many Indian and Pakistani posters, you need to go and learn your basics about a subject before commenting.

@A1Kaid UK went to an Indian, LNM Mittal to get money for a building for London Olympics. For me that was like, you ruled us and now you are asking money from us.

Tide of Time can change the current.

I don't expect apology from them. To apologize for something wrong done by someone, requires courage which UK doesn't have.

Btw what exactly did Britain loot from India? Name me things.
Gold and other Jewels.

A temple treasure found few months ago contained gold, silver and jewels worth $ 20 billion. Its just one temple.

Ah, I see now. I was wondering where you got your peculiar view of Indian history. It is clear from your last post that you have read a magazine article explaining India in three or four pages. Your post is so full of error that it is painful to contemplate.

Where did I say that differences never existed before the British? Let us start with your opening error, which, ironically, is not based on historical error but on a simple failure to comprehend English.

Money. Currency. Bullion.

There are specialized text books dealing with the subject. There is an entire branch of economic history dealing with it. Difficult to compress it within three magazine pages.

Fair enough. Britain and France stole many historical items from China too. They sell them off for billions in auctions and also it's inside their museums. I think the government is actively trying to identify all the items. Many private Chinese buyers buy those and bring them back to China. But many in China argue we should not be paying for things that are ours and paying for them just justifies British and French imperialism.

@Joe Shearer Sometimes its so tempting to act like a tool. :D

Anonymity of forum give the chance which I can't have in real life as I have to be good person throughout :D

Personally, I don't care if they apologize or not. For me, the important thing is that I have to apologize for every hungry, uneducated and oppressed citizen of India and not mere lip service but doing something for them.

Dwelling in past is something I don't like, just making a casual post in this thread. :enjoy:

Ok, if I'm wrong then explain to me how you view things. Because my view is pretty much the universal view of India by the VAST MAJORITY of foreigners.
Unless you can counter me, my view is the correct one.
