"And when the Qur'an is recited, listen to it carefully and remain silent so that mercy can be obtained by you ." 7:204
If I take the literal meaning of mercy, then I will be imagining myself begging forgiveness for my sins (which I should in any case irrespective of if I am listening to Quran or not), so what kind of mercy can be shown to me by listening to Quran then? The biggest mercy for me would be know my purpose in this world.
"And the Messenger will say, (On the day of Judgement) "O my Lord, these are my own people who had deserted this Qur'an ." Surah Al Furqaan No.25 Ayat No.30

Messenger of ALLAH wasn't doing anything in contradiction with Quran or outside Quran.

"Had We sent down this Qur'an on a mountain, verily, thou wouldst have seen it humble itself and cleave asunder for fear of Allah. Such are the similitudes which We propound to men, that they may reflect." 59:21
If you wish to understand Muhammad, then read Quran. It is as simple as that.
