What is pakistani culture?

Never thought I'd agree with you, however, that's a good analysis!

Discussing weddings is certainly not relevant to topic. But lets discuss role of interethnic marraiges in evolution of a culture.
In my opinion interethnic marraiges increase understanding between two communities but have no role in shaping a culture , unless it is on mass scale. Forexample a punjabi girl wedded to a traditional pashtun family in bannu would adopt and adjust her life in accordance to pashtun household of her husband and would learn pashto which is the spoken langauge in bannu and Her children would grow up as pashtun kids in heavy pashtun enviroment of bannu. On the other hand cities are never cultural reservior of any community, so if a non-traditional urban pashtun islamabad in islamabad marries a non-traditional urban punjabi then it has zero impact on changing cultures of respective communities, same is case with other urban centres.
Factors like governament, media, literature, education etc have main role in changing a culture.

Jo sawal aap ne yahan pe poocha ye sawal apko apne dada , dadi se poochna chahiay tha. Culture is a thing which one shouldnt be confused about at all. Crisis situation mai hain sir aap. You get the real picture what you see and experience in your family and people around you not on PDF. This is my personal view , dont take it offensively.

I am pashtun with pashtun culture and traditions, i am not culture-less. But i am not clear about this pakistani culture and its content.

Tera roz ka masla hai.

Har roz hamay divide kernay wali koi cheez le ke a jata hai.

The way I see it, Pakistani Culture is all three of these :

(a) The Cultures of our different ethnic & linguistic communities.

(b) The overlapping Culture that has been bred due to centuries of continued existence with ethnicities exchanging different cultural practices that were traditionally uniquely associated with another ethnicity. For example most of our older generation is fond of wearing the Karakuli Cap even if its unique to the Pasthun belt, the Peshawari chappal is worn across Pakistan & the koti (vest) that may have its origin in the UP is worn across Pakistan now whether its by the Pasthuns or the Punjabis.

(c) An overarching appreciation of how Islam has deeply influenced our respective cultures & enjoys a special place in our outlook on life & about life & I'm not talking about praying 5 times a day or fasting but rather that standards of propriety, of ethics & morality are indeed a part of a culture & they in turn breed or let die different cultural practices or dispositions. This also leads to a greater appreciation of 'Hum log eik qaum hai kiyun ke hum Musalmaan hain' then otherwise possible in a society with such distinct ethno-linguistic fault-lines !

:undecided:-
Dont know its the weather or something but i am having trouble comprehending what you wrote-:P-
Maybe i will have to take english lessons again-

You, are correct but do you agree that the new generation of such marriages would have a better, understanding of both maternal and paternal cultures and would over a period of time and through their intellectual growth would find an equilibrium between both cultures which ain't that far apart to begin with - finally overtime resulting in the cultural evolution ?

Its an interesting point, you have raised. However looking at the examples i have see myself, one of my best friends has a Pashtun father and a Punjabi mother. He seems to have found, a Cartridge to fare between the both. Lala, we are a young nation by all means, its up to us how the thing called "Pakistani culture" would look like when it finally forms and matures.

I, for one - love all dearly. I have Punjabi friends, Sindhi, Baloch and Pashtun friends. I grew up with two Pashtun kids who's families had migrated from Kandahar. We, all fare pretty well and are very well integrated. They crack jokes at me and i reply them back-- we have a good laugh and move on. Lastly, Islam is an "inclusive" religion not "exclusive", from uniting the deeply divided Beduans to other non Arabs, Persians and Indians.. the message of Musawaat in Islam is powerful and i have every reason to hope that our Pakistani culture when it finally shapes up would be "inclusive" not "exclusive" as Islam teaches.

I appreciate your optimistic thought process but by doing so you always diverge from the main point. And also you always extend your personal point of view to "we" and "us".
kalash people are pakistanis and their dance is certainly pakistani but does it pop up into your mind when some one say "pakistani culture". Your lahoris dont do kalash dance neither it is performed elsewhere in Pakistan. So kalash dance is only part of kalash culture. Curruntly if there is such thing as pakistani culture then it should include only those parts which are common to all cultures in pakistan while at the same time cultural diversity should be appreciated, not feared. Pakistan is simply a multicultural country.

Tou yaaar who said it otherwise ? Didn't I say that give each ethnicity the space to express themselves ? Pakistan is an ancient land inhabited by ancient people each with a unique culture, language & history of their own; my only contention was that Pakistani culture is a cauldron & not a quagmire of our different civilizations interacting, co-existing & creating an overarching identity that binds us together. What that essentially means is two things :

(a) Our cultures by & large are not at logger heads with each other because of the very conspicuous foot-print that Islam has left on each of our cultures & that my friend is what breeds understandability & perhaps even a sense of affinity to the point where we find ourselves appreciating the Jirga System & the Pashtunwali for its love for justice & fair-play & you guys find yourself appreciating us for the vibrancy & the sense of inclusivity of our culture. Does that mean that you're going to do a Bhangra & I a Khattak Dance ? No...all it means is that we've come to appreciate what the other brings to the table.

(b) Just as our cultures have absorbed certain things (dresses, codes of conduct, cuisines, outlook on life etc.) from each other's cultures over the centuries & have at times evolved somewhat uniquely than, shall we say, our puritan counterparts in Afghanistan, Indian Occupied Kashmir or Indian Punjab, the many generations long after you & I would have taken this co-existence to new heights as is inevitable for the geographic & time-related barriers of the past have fallen & now I can go back & forth between Peshawar & Lahore more easily than my Grand Father could. We would continue to evolve in our unique pattern & I know you're going to talk about the dominance of one over the other but I think I'd be justified in asking that if the evolution is organic, self-induced & self-sustained do you really think its suppression or dominance ?

Just wait & see...65 years in a Nation's history is peanuts & perhaps not even that. We're wearing the Peshawar chappal now & eating the Chappal Kebab....we'd have more influx of Pashtun culture & vice versa for you. I think Karachi being 'the' cosmopolitan city is where this would start if its not already begun.

In my opinion pakistani culture is a sudden formation made in 1947 as a result of two nation theory . It also implies making heroes of only muslim invaders and neglecting local heroes and local languages.
And topic have been discussed alot of times

Pakistani culture is the most amusing topic over Pakistani television, Discussions and net forums. We see a peculiar thing over such discussions that Pakistanis tend to move away from their roots towards Arabs but find no compatibility with Arabs. They tend to suppress the bravery, culture, values, language, and pain of their forefathers and glorify the invaders who destroyed everything of their origin and history. In turn they end up in frustration. To a great extent Gen Zia's rewriting of history is also responsible for this misery. Qasim, Khilji, Gajanvids, Timur, Gauri, Aurangzeb and Islam all have destroyed Pakistans great culture, values and ethics.

oh man you just signed up again for trolling and digged an old thread. seems TOI doesnt have ant anti-Pakistan shyt today.

in one such thread in the past i asked the same question " What is Indian Culture" ??

Pakistani culture is a term for not one culture but various cultures united under the name of the Pakistani flag. Pakistani culture is made up of Baloch culture, Sindhi culture, Punjabi culture and Pashtun culture and among these are 200+ other cultures defined by the language people speak and the dress that they wear and the food that they eat.

When someone says Pakistani culture - It is inclusive of culture & traditions of all ethnic groups , it doesn't mean a uniform thing and it never can be because we are diverse country. I feel proud of this diversification and admire it's beauty. Thing which i feel is lacking the national level promotion of these culture to bring each ethnicity more close. i.e. celebrating cultural festivals at national level i.e. Basant, Noroz, Christmas, Devali and lot more, this will bring more understanding about each other and also provide opportunities to enjoy life.

Sorry to say but i wud never support unislamic festivals like basant, nowroz or kufr festivals like christmas and dewali to be celebrated at national level rather such festivals shud be banned and strictly prohibited in an islamic country (though non-muslims could celebrate them privately).

Moreover i believe rather than just restrict ourselves to Pakistan and Pakistanis we should think on a global pan-islamic level and appreciate good aspects of every muslim culture whether Arab, Afghan, Turkish, Indian, Bengali or Malaysian etc. If it were possible for me i wud have abolished all these colonialists drawn and imposed boundries and borders which has only sowed the disease of nationalism among muslims and served the colonialists agenda. Ofcourse the rotten nationalistic slogan of "Sab Se Pehlay Pakistan" introduced by maloon accursed Busharraf was not without reason and which the maloon and his cohorts also used as justification for alliance with US on invasion of Afghanistan.

Thank God you are NOT in charge of any country.

Why dont u share the dream of a united ummah? when Christians and Jews of the European Union have already abolished their borders and are literally living as a single entity and also trying to expand their unified entity's borders further why do u want muslims to remain restricted to banana states like UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain so that the kuffar keep exploiting us further?

How about you start thinking about how to make Pakistan stronger as a nation.

The "ummah" can come later, we have our problems to worry about.

Why don't you take up engineering and give Pakistan the gift of cheaper energy, or cheap healthcare.

Stop chasing a system which is out dated, this is 2013. The era of nation states.

The Khilifa model died with the Ottomans. It self destructed as Arabs revolted. That means this system is unable maintain as an entity in the connected world. As societies evolve so does how they view the world and what is right or wrong. This model can very easily become fascism and create more problems than solve.

Your nation state is Pakistan, start contributing in the forum on how we can improve lives in our country by helping the poor.
