So yesterday was apparently Father's Day. Great. Nothing much different from any other Sunday for me to be honest. Some middle distance grinding in the morning (coming back from an injury) followed by chillaxed bonnie and breakfast with the newspaper after a good stretch. The world cup and the late night matches have been playing havoc with my cycling, but this is not what the post or the separate thread is about.
Our neighbor's daughter came over in the evening coz she's been wanting to meet me for a few weeks now but somehow could not. She's going on this trip into the mountains and me being somewhat of a biker and mountain expert of sorts, she wanted my advice on a number of things. What to carry. How to pack. What to wear. Medicines and altitude sickness. Would there be ATMs along the way (!). Would there be loos along the way (!!). Footwear. Rainwear. Should they carry some packed eats, what food would they get along the way. How cold would the nights be. Etc etc etc.
She's been going around with a guy for some time now, we've all seen them together. I've even seen them chatting outside her gate when I drive into mine from work (though she's always been embarrassed and looking the other way). And we've never really met him. Though my kids have and like all kids, they are all totally connected on FB etc. All great so far.
So along with her she had got him also over. And since he was just standing uncomfortably to the side, I said Hi and introduced myself. And then she shyly introduced him to me (I did not get his name ....).
So after they had gone, at night my middle one was chatting with me. And asked me out of the blue, did you meet her boyfriend. I said ya, why? Did you like him? I said he's ok, so? No she actually wanted you to meet him! I go hmmmm, but why? I'm not her dad!
And my 17 year old tells me - ya dada, but she doesn't have a dad.
What a powerful statement man. It shook me to my core. This is what kids are, and then they eventually grow up and become like us.
Just thought of a random share. No lessons or morals here.
Cheers, Doc
