USAID: Vietnam per capita income should be over $7000, not $1500

Some cultural aspects that I like about Cebu City....

Cebu City is the oldest city in the Philippines, actually. It has an abundance of Chinese, Japanese, and other western foreign investments / presence.

I never know Philippine has this kind of place. Last time I visit Philippine I can't eat their rice. No offend here Philippine friend, but rice in Manila test bad. A lot of Slum too. Last time my employer wanted me to stay at Philippine for a year with good incentive, I had to quit the job because I have family and I really don't know how to raise my kids there to be a Thai speaker, also security problems.

Manila is not that clean, it is an overcrowded mega-metropolis. There are over 25 million people that live in the Greater Metro Manila Region. This is why I don't think quality of life is so good in most of the city, perhaps in Makati region, yes, but not the rest.

A lot of foreigners that come to the Philippines base their judgment of the country to their experiences in Manila. They need to explore the northern island of Luzon, which has so many provinces still and greater view.

The Central region is called the Visyas, and is home to three major areas: Eastern Visayas, Central Visayas and Western Visayas. The level of development in these areas are to be seen, and quality of life , i would say is better than living in small squalid quarters in Manila.

I am personally thinking about buying property in Cebu Province; it is a summer destination spot of mine. I'm looking into either a condominium or a house / property.

This is a house and lot in Cebu that I'm looking into: It is quite affordable; around 2.5 - 3 million pesos , or around $60,000 - $67,000.
A good investment, i think.

When Dan Brown's novel mentions Manila as "the gates of hell," he was right there; everything here is in bad condition and with a new political circus brewing up here, things are going to take a nose dive. Security issue here in Manila is a joke as some cops here are corrupt. As for the slums, I would advise to stay away from them; if you are a well-dressed Filipino passing through there, the chances of being robbed or swindled are high and if you are a foreigner, the chances are higher.

I can't blame you if you quit the job considering that Manila is getting worse, in fact, the NAIA airport should give hints and signs as to what most of Manila looks like. As for cities south of Manila such Cebu, it looks cleaner as it hasn't been touched with the reckless urbanization and political mismanagement Manila has experienced.

Also, I am not much offended since much is true though I am not sure about the reactions of other Filipinos here...

Cebu was considered to be the original capital of the Philippines as this was the place that Spain first had landed and made converts but they choose Manila as it was "strategic location" due to its bay.

You're also right about the foreigners saying "Philippines is bad place" as most of them are going here in Manila. To be honest, one of the consequences of reckless urbanization of Manila is that it is getting too crowded and not only that, the concept of Metro Manila itself - it was created as the national capital region of the country that is divided into cities, each having its own local government but no "central government" to oversee the development of the city.

In simple terms, if you are an urban planner, Metro Manila would be your worst nightmare.

As for Vietnam-Philippine comparison, due to current political instability (which never ends) here in the Philippines and the looming power crisis here which will happen around 2015, it is likely that Vietnam will surpass us in economic standings here in ASEAN. I am not sure how but since our politicians like to shoot ourselves on the feet, nothing will change here.

Dont offend but I prefer a 140 mil with 50,000 USD / year / person of Japan ; to 1.4 billion with 5,000 USD / year / person in China
I prefer 1.3 billion people with $6500 USD per person than a population of 93 m with $1200 per person. Don't offend, just telling the truth.

@Edison Chen ,@LeveragedBuyout , @Chinese-Dragon et al,

If Vietnam's per capital is $1400 per year then, you know what i'm thinking, right? That means if we go to Viet Nam, we can get more Bang for our Buck.

Time to go to Viet Nam for Vay Cay! :-)

You look at thing from too simplistic point of view. Based on that, Japan, US, Europe will not have any investment at all and Africa and India will get most of the world's investment.

Pee Chai @somsak , Hanoi looks beautiful!

I don't think you comprehended my point, which was stressing on the low cost of living there. Talk a chill pill, dude. I was addressing @Edison Chen , NOT you.

So based upon that figure Vietnam is poorer than India?
Millions of Vietnamese must be living in slums or starving death.

VN is underrated. VN should at least have a $100,000 GDP per capital.

They will surpass Luxembourg next year.
I see you got a new avatar. You look older. What is happening?

Anyway I see you still keep your humour. That is a good thing.

And a Pho cost $1.5 in Vietnam, this price is acceptable to many people.

This is not my real avatar, the last one was. By the way, I shaved my head a couple of weeks ago, it looks more handsome.

Simply judging by pictures and first impression, generally VN's living standard is higher than India.
