US ready to assist Pakistan, India resolve Siachen conflict

It's intriguing to note that the US of A is volunteering to assist India and Pakistan find a solution to the Siachen dispute, when they've been trying their darnedest to sort out Afghanistan which has already taken them ten long years and still no solution in sight! Palestine, Somalia, Iraq, Georgia, the Velvet revolutions, Afghanistan - all epic failures!

So what were they thinking when they proposed this? Jeeez!

When there is no conflict, I don't think US intervention is needed at all. What conflict? Only the cowardly anti-Indian government has a problem in Delhi. There's no conflict.

We may reduce the number of troops on the ground,but a withdrawal of Armed forces is strict no-no.
We have suffered 0 casualties recently to frost bite and only half a dozen to avalanches in 8 years.
Even if the casualties were a 500 times higher we will not withdraw.

Leave everything to Kashmiris. It is their land and its their right to decide what the solution is.

Why don't you guys decide first whether Siachen is part of Kashmir or not? Check out a post from a Pakistani friend here....

In a paper published in the Pakistan Journal of History & Culture, the writer Dr Ishtiaq Ahmad, (associate professor at Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad) notes that it is disputed whether Siachen is even part of J&K. It falls under the Pakistani-administrated northern areas of the Baltistan region, the paper says. It further claims that the northern areas have no ethnic or cultural similarities with the Kashmiri people and hence their fate should not be linked with the resolution of the J&K dispute.

So then, on the one hand you say that it should be left to the Kashmiris to decide and on the other that Siachen doesn't form part of Kashmir at all! Ooops!

Confusion confounded, what? First sort it out and then we'll talk!

Troops should be reduced to few hundreds, and preferably change their role to aiding tourism and scientific research. Bring in scientists from all over the world.

Already went through the thread,only 5 casualties due to avalanches.No body has dies from frostbite which accounted for half of casualties during 80's
Heli crashes and fires due to short circuit are not mother nature's work is it.

Anyway as I said Casualties are not a problem,even if 5 soldiers died a day it is not a problem,we have enough men to replace them.

A US cable leaked by wikileaks stated that every time India and Pakistan came “very close” to an agreement on the Siachen issue, the prime minister of the day would be forced to back out by the Indian defence establishment, the Congress Party hardliners and opposition leaders.
Our Home minister,NSA,military chief's have no wish of withdrawing from Siachen,so do I(But my opinion doesn't count )

Now that entire pak camp hq is wiped out, will they constuct new one at same site? Different site? Or completelyy pack up? This gives indians opportunity to reduce troop presence for couple years, perhaps?
Pak has to start from scratch, may ask chinese to rebuild for them. interesting to see how things unfold. Till then RIP to dead soldiers.

it is interesting to see that pakistani friends realized that terrorism is a bad thing when they themselves started dying from the blasts. Pakistanis found out that ethnic cleansing of ahnedis could be bad when even sunnis started dying. Punjabis thought that exploiration of baloch is bad when baloch started killing them and now the pakistani army which did the kargill adventure just to cut off siachen thinks that it is futile when they are now losing men and hope!

How about learning even now for it is not too late to stop terrorist support against india and then india can be more open to siachen resolution. But how can you make a fox eat grass!! Alas.

India rather than being defensive should take on more offensive posture. Why is it when anybody talks of Kashmir Issue, it is seen as one of Indian occupation rather than Pakistani occupation. India should improve its PR w.r.t Kashmir. It should change the tact and ask for Pak occupied Kashmir as our legitimate land, kind of what China does with our AP. No matter what anybody say, Indian politicians are dumb pacifists.

Siachen belongs to Baltistan. Baltistan is not a part of J&K and is a part of Pakistan. Siachen belongs to Pakistan.
