The US Marine Corps Pacific Commander General Duane D. Thiessen confirmed in an interview in Philippines today that the Philippines held islands in Spratlys are covered by the US-Philippines mutual defense treaty and that the US will intervene militarily if attacked by hostile forces.

That's interesting :) no opinions from possible hostile side yet ???? I think Ban on thier prime asset on PDF has made them under strength

How else you expect a military man would say when a question is presented to him concerning his domain.

The United States has also been quiet on whether it would honor the Mutual Defense Treaty it signed with its Philippine ally should a shooting war break out with China. The US Congressional Research Service said the US-Philippine Mutual Defense Treaty is open to interpretation, with the US obliged to respond only if a foreign military attacks Philippine territory or military forces. By this definition, the obligation for the US to protect Philippine claims to the Spratlys or Scarborough Shoal is uncertain.

So you know more than the General about the treaty. Good :) hope general understand your stand

No I do not know more than the general. But I do know when the interviewer present such a stupid question knowingly what answer would be. You don't expect him to say no we're not going to help Philippines, do you?

both the philippines and usa excluded Wangyan dao when they drew the map marking the area covered for their co-operation many decades ago!

Yes offcourse he should say no. He isn't any political @ss to do BS. If its not his responsibility it's not. He isn't going to part of any political BS for no reason

Do you remember Mullers speech in senet ??? He go against the administration. Done his job. Didn't BS. It was administration who did BS not general. Same apply here

I'm not saying he's BS ing. Before he gets his order from the civilian government it's a natural thing for him to say because he's in charge of this area.

It's correct. In short you want to say Civilian Govt. won't honour it's words ???
That's most unlikely situation considering USA-China relations. But we don't know what's in future but uncle Sam is most predictable all over the history. So it will also be same old thing

Please I did not imply the civilian government won't honor its words. The bold part of my first post is from the Congressional Research Service which she implies the Mutual Defense Treaty with Philippines might not cover the dispute areas.

In fact the US government has been reiterated many times in the past that she would not involve in the SCS disputes.

The US will not support one's claim over the other, but will defend what's being held by the country it has obligation to defend.

I will give you an example. Japan has three territorial disputes; Diaoyutai, Liancourt Rocks, and the Kurils. Of three, Hillary Clinton confirms the US will defend the Diaoyutai because it is currently under Japanese administration. The US will not make military moves on the Liancourt Rocks and the Kurils, as these are administered by Korea and Russia and are not under Japanese administration.

Likewise, the US doesn't back Philippine's claims in Spratlys, but will defend Philippines' holdings in the region.

Hey that's interesting. You have any link on the bold part, I would like to know.

If China ever goes down (god forbid), the US Navy would take over the islands. Guam and those little islands are not sufficient to exert their naval influence in the Asia-Pacific region. Philippines is just a little proxy (i.e. wh0re) to keep China at bay till their dream materializes.
