The United States approved on Wednesday the sale of Patriot missiles to Turkey.

The State Department said it had informed Congress of plans to sell Turkey a Patriot package that includes 80 Patriot missiles, and 60 PAC-3 missile interceptors and related equipment, in a deal worth $3.5 billion.

"The proposed sale will increase the defensive capabilities of the Turkey military to guard against hostile aggression and shield NATO allies who might train and operate within Turkey's borders," a statement said.

Ankara a year ago announced a deal to purchase rival S-400 missiles from Russia, drawing a rebuke from its allies in NATO -- a group originally formed as a bulwark against the Soviet Union.

A State Department official said that Turkey was jeopardizing participation in another US military program, the coveted F-35 fighter jets, if Turkey still went ahead with the S-400 sale.

Turkey could also face sanctions on defense purchases under US law if it goes ahead, the official said on condition of anonymity.

A purchase from Russia "would have serious ramifications for US ability to do business with Turkey across the defense trade spectrum," the official said.

"It is important that NATO countries procure military equipment that is interoperable with NATO systems. A Russian system would not meet that standard," he said.

Meanwhile, two Turkish officials said Ankara has not changed its decision to buy the S-400 missile defense systems from Russia but welcomes the Patriot system sale.

One official described the State Department decision as good signal for Ankara's troubled relations with Washington, and Turkey was now waiting for the next US step.

"Turkey has not changed the decision to buy the S-400 defense system from Russia," the official said. "As an ally, the US should sell it to Turkey...but we have been waiting their approval."

The announcement comes hours after President Donald Trump said that the United States had defeated ISIS in neighboring Syria -- leading to the withdrawal of US troops, who had effectively protected Turkey's campaign against Kurdish fighters.

There was no immediate indication that the two announcements were linked, although Trump has made clear that arms sales are a top priority for him.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday vowed to "remove" the Kurdish fighters if necessary, as he said he had spoken by telephone with Trump and agreed on cooperation in Syria.

Is PAC3 half as capable as S400? @LeGenD ?
In what aspects? Patriot isn't as good at missile defense but that's what the THAAD is for and yes I do think it does compare pretty well to the S-400. I suggest you go online and check for these answers yourself.

If Turkey cant get F35 how will their parliament allow their government to sell this patriot missiles while the same parliament stopped F35?

I hope Turkey takes a wise decision and not waste 3.5 billion.

A known enemy is better than an unknown friend

An anecdote from Jinnah (May Allah be pleased with him). It was the beginning time of WW2. Germany and Japan were in full surge, and the British Empire was threatened like never before. The Imperial Japanese Army was charging toward India. Gandhi somehow could fathom that the Japs would win the war, so he initiated a "non-cooperation" and "quit India" movement when the British were most vulnerable. Now, Jinnah correctly figured out that WW1 results would repeat, so he famously said, "a known enemy is better than an unknown friend"!!!! He asked the Muslim youth to join the British Army en masse!! And, he struck a deal with the British Establishment - they won't quit India unless Jinnah's demands are met!!!! What a prudent decision (IMO it was a Divine help)!!! The rest is history....

We go for S-400. Period. US missed the train. Meanwhile our own systems will mature enough. S-400 or Patriot etc. is just for gap filling.
