Don't you think a radical reform is needed in Turkish armed force, especially when it is compared with modern western armies?

^I think the armed forces is slowly shrinking, I think we should maintain above 700.000 manpower at all times. In other terms Turkey might be considered an European country but our defense needs belong to a total different universe.

I do not agree. :D
The current modern conflicts prove that quality beats the quantity. 4000+ armed vehicles and 1,000,000 personnel of Iraq's armed force do not provide any advantage during 1991 war.

That's what happens when you rely on sheer manpower. Which is not what I've said :)

We are advancing in military technologies faster than any country in the region but it doesn't mean we can send our troops home and expect the technology to do the fighting :) Wars are fought by soldiers.

dont forget in that war Coalition forces also had 900,000 personnel ,4000+ armed vehicles and thousands of jets

Nowadays,The US still have a very huge armed forces of 1,456,862 Active personnel and 500,000National Guard

the EU countries reduced their army only because of peace, not quality

The S.Korea has a force same size as Turkey

US still have a very huge armed forces of 1,456,862 Active personnel, only second to China

US population: 313,914,040..........Armed force as percent of population: 0.46%
Turkey population: 75,627,384......Armed force as percent of population: 0.90%

If Turkish armed forces plan be a modern and active army similar to US armed forces, then the number of armed forces will be 348000 personnel but before that the army should experience a revolutionary upgrade program.

South Korean.............

Korea still is not at peace state and flows every step to be stronger. Turkey is at peace state and should save money to develop more advanced systems for the costumers.

Comparing western counterparts Turkey should:
1- heavily improve her navy in displacement
2- reduce but heavily upgrades her land forces
3- keeps the current air force state up to date

Nowadays you don't make sense at all. US is the least threatened nation in this entire universe with the nearest threat Cuba it's perfectly normal for them to be in this situation. We don't have overseas interests, our strategic targets are located in Balkans, Causcaus and Middle East. With all problematic neighbors we have, Russia, İran, Syria, Iraq and Greece, and now Israel. We need to maintain a power enough to beat two of their armed forces at a time. Which is exactly what we are doing.

LHD project may be a first step for us, to a new level of readiness. But that's another story. The point is, we aren't in a peace state. When the winter is over PKK attacks will start again, they'll hit us. We'll hit them back. Not only we need to maintain these numbers we also have emergency operational needs.

we already have. Our CO's during the republic era, they fitted our forces very well. We're modern and powerful.

1- In the news maybe you only see magazine vests in our soldiers. It's because they're not in danger or in operational area. Just look at our guys in east. Every soldier has armor, optic sights.

2- we have 6 regular elite brigates without counting Naval Infantry, Air Corps, SAS, SAT, JÖAK, JÖH and 40,000 men Special Forces Command. By logic, 1/5 of our military is elite. So we have an elite force same size of most of the european countries.

3- our army's main manpower strategy is maintaining quick recall in case of war. That's why Maroon Berets are at "Corps" stage. According to MB's mission. They're also responsible for training the men recalled for the army in wartimes.

One question, do you know how many men we can recall to the army in a couple of hours? It's more than 8-10,000,000. And also think about they would be trained by Maroon Berets in case of war? No country in the world can easily do that. As you can see we have an excellent military strategy since 1923 and it never changed just as it won't.

BTW that's way Conscriptation is a very well working system in Turkey.

"Enduring Peace, Defending the constitution of Turkey, countring against any domestic or foreign threats, providing trained men in case of war as quick as possible."

sence:moil:

US is the least threatened nation in this entire universe

But the most threatening one! come on man, we are talking about a super power which has a rule in every war around the world not a country like Canada.

We don't have overseas interests

You will have, when the GDP is high enough. France and UK enjoy huge navies. South Korea and India, China are emerging blue water navies. You should not only consider current status.

We need to maintain a power enough to beat two of their armed forces at a time. Which is exactly what we are doing.

The problem is "the power you are talking about" wont come from the number of personnel in 21th century. That is the technology which fills the gaps.

How many soldiers one should put on borders to do the duty of Gokturk 1 and GÖKTÜRK-3 + incoming MALE and HALE UAVs. By saving money from contracting the quantity, more sources will be available to improve the quality.

Think about unmanned ground vehicles which move ahead of personnel in conflicts. Think about Battle long range UAVs which save the pilots on veteran missions. Think about "very long duration of flight UAVs". Think about an advanced indigenous effective long range air-defence system. Think about high precision long range missiles. I know some of them are under consideration but these are very costly projects. Considering the limited sources available, saving the sources will help their development.

Not to mension the Gendarmie with there 200.000 Number of Troops lol :)

In peace ?

There are not any pkk in Korea

Also,I think Gendarmie should not be counted in the armed force, they are just like MP

And don't forget the Conscript is not expansive, you cut the number can't save lots of money

The cure of PKK is not huge number of regular personnel but Lots of security cameras + armed UAVs + T129s + cirit + Aselsan Karakols and Bordo team transferred by Chinooks, protected by MRAPs equipped with RC weapons.

A western armed force ,such as our JSAF,spend most of money to pay the salary to the soldiers ,but not the technology

Turkey use conscription so reduce the number can't not save lots of money.

I think about 500000(except gendarme ) is a good number
