British counter-terrorism units have launched an investigation into the theft of anti-tank mines used in Afghanistan form a freight train in Britain’s Cheshire region.

The mines, which belonged to the British Ministry of Defense (MoD), were reported missing after the train that left Longtown, Cumbria on Wednesday arrived at Didcot, Oxfordshire the next morning.

Media reports said ten packages containing anti-tank mines used by UK troops in Afghanistan have been stolen probably when the train stopped in Warrington, Cheshire.

The North West Counter Terrorism Unit (NWCTU), which is investigating the theft in conjunction with the Metropolitan Police, Britain transport police and the MoD, has said they do not believe the theft has been a terrorist operation.

“At this stage there is nothing to suggest the theft is terrorist-related but due to the potential complexity of the investigation our inquiries are being led by counter terrorism officers,” said the NWCTU assistant chief constable Terry Sweeney.

Sweeney has claimed the explosive items do “not pose a risk to the public.”
