BEIJING: Rights groups condemned China on Wednesday for charging a prominent Uighur critic of government policy towards the mostly-Muslim minority with separatism — which can carry the death penalty.

Ilham Tohti, an economics lecturer at a university in Beijing, has been formally accused of the offence, his wife Guzaili Nu'er told AFP.

Tohti has been one of the most prominent critics of Chinese policy in Xinjiang, the vast western region where most Uighurs live and which is periodically hit by violent clashes between locals and China's security forces.

China maintains that unrest in the region is caused by terrorist groups seeking an independent state, an account denied by Uighur rights groups who complain of widespread religious repression and economic discrimination.

"China's accusations of separatism are merely an excuse for suppression of those with different political opinions," said Dilshat Rexit, a spokesman for the World Uyghur Congress, an exile group.

"We call on the international community to monitor China and free this Uighur scholar," he added in a statement.

The US-based Uyghur Human Rights Project said in a statement the charge against Tohti "reflects not only a zero tolerance policy to Uyghur dissent, but also the growing intractability of China towards international criticism of its ethnic policies".

The group also called on China to account for the whereabouts of Tohti, who has not been allowed to contact his family or see a lawyer since his arrest last month.

Tensions in Xinjiang, a strategically important region which abuts central Asia, have risen in the past year with a series of deadly clashes.

Police also blamed suspects from the region for apparently deliberately crashing a car in Beijing's famous Tiananmen Square in October, killing two tourists and the three people in the vehicle.

The crash led President Xi Jinping to call for a security push in Xinjiang. Tohti had challenged the government's account of the crash.

The United States and the European Union have both condemned Tohti's arrest.

China's courts are tightly controlled by the ruling Communist party, and have previously handed lengthy jail sentences to intellectuals who have spoken out against the authorities.

A new entry in the long list of scholars and activists who have paid the price of raising their voice against an oppressive Government. It was expected though.

Yeah and No Pakistani will talk about attrocities of China on Muslims.

We didn't lock him up because he's Muslim, but because he's a separatist.

China has strict rules on separatism, one China policy can be talked about it, but not while we still have territorial disputes, the fact that they are talking about it means they give little thought to China's national interests, so why should we care for him.

As to atrocities, 2002 Gujarat violence, you guys target Muslims, not one time did China say no to Muslims, we say no to terriorsts and separatists, it's not like only Muslim terrorists are locked up Han terrorists as well.

@DRAY

would you prefer China to do the Indian thing of letting people speak, but ignoring them? Cause we can do that too, but it goes against our belief of doing the job you are paid to do, like increase national security, increase
living standards of all Chinese, and reclaim our place in the sun.

India isn't oppressive, it's non responsive. There's benefits to both, but also down sides.

Pakistan was created to get away from the Hindu majority, with so many wars, and stuff, you can understand. There's also persecution on the Muslims in India before, this you cannot deny.

I'm also going to say something that you don't really think about being Indian, China is more or less all Atheists, sure we have religious people, but they are not hardcore, most of them. They are like my parents, they go to church more as a meeting place for friends and such, who God is, is irrelevant to them.

China doesn't really persecute religion, it's never been a key theme. We are more pragmatic, except the brief Communist all out craziness which originated from the Russians.

Xinjiang 60 percent ethnic majority has 51 percent of all party jobs in Xinjiang. They also have representation in Central government. China is different than India, you can be side lined even in central government(if democracy is as I know it, from Canada and US) in China a central position brings power period.

Karma is a bi....

Before the end China will get a piece of their own pie. The clock is ticking.

Uighur should side with Japan in the coming war.
