Several years back I have been to Xinjiang Urumqi, driven to Altai City in the North and went by air to Kashgar and then driven to Kyrgyz areas nearby. None of my Uighur, Kazakh and Kyrgyz local friends expressed any sympathy for separatism. They know China is a fast growing and developing country and they know that they have a great future waiting for them as a citizen of a future great power.

My guess would be that the disturbances are works funded by China's traditional enemies and competitors who are feeling pressures due to China's rise.
