Turkey To Begin Launch System, Gokturk-3 Negotiations
Posted by Amy Svitak 12:31 PM on Jan 22, 2013

Ankara is planning development of a national satellite launch system capable of delivering military and civil spacecraft to orbit, according to Turkish Defense Minister Ismet Yilmaz.

Following a Jan. 3 meeting of Turkey’s Defense Industry Executive Committee, Yilmaz said the government will enter negotiations with Turkish weapons builder Roketsan Inc. for the early concept design phase of a new launch system “to ensure that military and civilian satellites can be sent into space,” Yilmaz said in a Jan. 3 statement.

During the meeting, attended by Yilmas and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the committee also approved the beginning of contract negotiations with Turkish Aerospace Industries for domestic development of a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) spacecraft dubbed Gokturk-3, with support from defense electronics manufacturer Aselsan and state research institute Tubitak.

With a space segment comprised of a single satellite equipped with SAR payload and a fixed main ground terminal and mobile backup ground station, Gokturk-3 is to provide high-resolution radar images from anywhere in the world in day/night, all-weather conditions, according to defense ministry requirements.

The pending contract negotiations are part of Ankara ’s broader effort to develop a national space program by the end of the decade that would include several civil and military telecom satellites and payloads in addition to dual-use surveillance spacecraft and the new launch system.

80% of Turksat 4A satellite has been completed. Turksat 4A satellite will be launched on November 2013

Türksat Genel Müdürü Özkan Dalbay , 2013 yılındaki en önemli hedeflerinin TURKSAT-4A uydusunun fırlatılması olduğunu belirterek, ''Şu anda yaklaşık yüzde 80'i bitti uydunun.

-Tamamen yerli uydu geliyor-

GÖKTÜRK-2 COMPLETES 1000 TRIPS AROUND THE GLOBE

Turkey's high resolution, home-made observation satellite, which was launched on December 18, GÖKTÜRK-2 has completed one thousand tours around the globe during its 70-day mission.

Successfully transmitting high-resolution imagery to a ground station in Ankara during its mission, GÖKTÜRK-2 established a total of 766 connections with ground stations. Experts went through test images gathered from all corners of the world. Each and every one of the satellite's trips around the world was monitored in regard to imagery and communication skills.

Work is underway to hand over the satellite to the Turkish Air Force. Officials at TÜBİTAK UZAY, Space Technologies Research Institute, are aiding Turkish Air Force personnel on the satellite, controlled from a ground station in Ahlatlıbel, Ankara.

Produced with 80 percent indigenously developed technology and 100% domestically developed software by TÜBİTAK UZAY, TUSAŞ, GÖKTÜRK-2 was launched from Jiuquan Launch Area in China on December 18, 2012.

The satellite was placed into a low Earth orbit of 686 km 12 minutes after the launch. The first images of Turkey were received in Antalya, while first images of the world were received in Auckland, Australia.

Countdown to start for two new Turkish satellites

The Türksat 4A and Türksat 4B satellites, which have been built jointly by Turkish and Japanese engineers, are about to be completed, Transport Minister Binali Yıldırım has said.

“98.8 percent of Türksat 4A and 89 percent of Türksat 4B is finished. After their tests are completed, we will send Türksat 4A to space at the end of this year and Türksat 4B in the first quarter of 2014,” Yıldırım said.

He also said the final stage of equipment building and integration of the two satellites that started being built two years ago in Japan had been reached. The building of the two satellites is continuing under the supervision of Türksat AŞ. Company, with the participation of 15 Turkish engineers.

“With Türksat 4A, also the African continent will be covered by our satellites. With this satellite, we will be able to cover the entire continent … The satellite functional and environmental tests, known as space environment compliance tests before the launch, will be conducted soon. We plan to finish these tests in six months and launch Türksat 4A into space,” Yıldırım said.

Türksat 4B is also being assembled alongside 4A, and will host 43 channels when finally operational. Türksat 4B will be orbiting at 50 degrees east and, like Türksat 4A, will cover North Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

It will also offer Internet services, and will be able to provide cheap broadband Internet to those regions in Turkey where the Internet is not available through the current terrestrial infrastructure, as well as to some neighboring countries. With the launching of the two satellites, Turkey’s satellite capacity will increase to three times
