Kurdish groups meeting in southeastern Turkey called for self-rule on Sunday amid heavy fighting in the region as the army pushed ahead with a security operation in which it says more than 200 Kurdish militants have been killed.

The Democratic People's Congress (DTK), made up of Kurdish non-governmental organisations, made the call after a two-day meeting in Diyarbakir.

"The rightful resistance mounted by our people against the policies that degrade the Kurdish problem, is essentially a demand and struggle for local self-governance and local democracy," said the final resolution of the meeting, titled "declaration of political resolution regarding self-rule".

The declaration called for the formation of autonomous regions including several neighbouring provinces of Diyarbakir to take account of cultural, economic and geographic affinities.

The call could escalate tensions between Kurds and the Turkish government as the government adamantly opposes a separate Kurdish state.

President Tayyip Erdogan said in a speech late on Saturday that Turkey would never allow the formation of another state within its borders.

"Now they are talking about separating our land in this country. With God's permission, we will never allow a surgery on the unity of our country," he said.

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu cancelled a planned meeting with the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) on Saturday, saying its politics were rooted in violence, as government forces pursued a security operation in the mainly Kurdish southeast.

The army said in a statement on Saturday that more than 200 Kurdish militants had been killed over the last two weeks.

Television footage showed tank fire and explosions in Cizre, a town in the southeastern province of Sirnak, where a curfew has been in place for 13 days.

Three soldiers were killed in a bomb attack there by the Kurdish militant group PKK, the army said on Sunday.

Turkey has been alarmed by territorial gains by Kurds in Syria's civil war, which it fears could stir separatism among its own Kurdish minority.

For the past three decades Ankara has been trying to end an insurgency by fighters of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which is classified as a terrorist organisation by the United States and the European Union.

A two-year ceasefire between Kurdish militants and Ankara fell apart in July, plunging the southeast back into a three-decades-old conflict that has killed more than 40,000 people.

Leading labour unions and professional chambers in Turkey have called for a one-day strike on Tuesday to demand peace, in protest against government-led military operations in southeastern Anatolia.

Ive only read the title, but if the Kurds of Turkey truly wanted independence than there is nothing Turkey could do. Imagine 15 million people wanting independence.. What could Turkey do ? Butcher them all?
Look at Catalonia, the government of Spain cant control a region where only 50% of the population want independence.

There is a reason why the Kurd's didn't get there own country after world war 1. It is because the majority of Turks/Kurd's view each other as brothers. And as long as this is the case, no one will get autonomy in Turkey.

Americans will not only wholeheartedly welcome their independent state. They will welcome it thereafter into NATO over Turkey.

Turkey, and I respect their right to a democratic decision, has decided to have an islamist rule them. So be it--- we would rather they leave NATO.

Again- you made your bed Turkey and we have no problems with what bed you want to lay in...BUT our values are polar opposite of the islamists. Americans like the kurds, they are hugely popular with Americans. We let you live with your decision Turkey. Respect ours. You thought you would stress us out by getting close to the Russians- till karma caught up.

They gone to Russia and came with this. They think kurds love russians much more thanTurks and want to live a sattalite state of Russians.
Reality kurds in Turkey are living better economic conditions than every country in the religion(accept the ones living in europe).Half of them living in big cities in the west of the Turkey.Yes they give votes to them for democratic progress.Thats not bad.IT doesnt mean they want a kurdish state. Not much of them want to left İstanbul,İzmir,Ankara,Antalya etc...to live in Hakkari,Şırnak etc...Or they may go to nortern Iraq.We are not at 2o years ago's situation. We are better in the economic and the democracy.Turkish people support their democratic rights. Our government seperates terorists from them.(We made mistakes and couldnt separete terorists .There is no way to overtake take over them without democratic improvements) Roles changed now. They begin to win their heart.
ı cant give Syria and Iraq as an example because of war in their country but can give Iran as example. If kurdish people are happy in living there we can easily say they are happy in Turkey too.Everyone understand what ı mean ı think.

hdp / kurds + iran + assad + shia in iraq + russia

Working together to break Turkey.

I feel sorry for the kurds in Turkey if they try anything, they will get to walk all the way to north iraq.

The only country strong enough to break-up turkey is USA not poor russia.

You should read about kurds in Turkey before assuming they are western friendly, they will kill their sister on spot for looking at some guy on the street. The kurds in Turkey are mostly extreme islamists.

We got close to russia?

Not really we shot down their plane, you on the other hand had signed an agreement to protect Ukraine but you didn't have the balls to do anything against russia, now shoo.

Americans also liked the Mujahideen in Afghanistan. You guys are a fickle lot. Your public liking or disliking a group is not a gauge of anything for the future.
