The first Turkish local-design medium combat aircraft is set to make its maiden flight in 2022, said Temel Kotil, the CEO of Turkish Aerospace Industries.

The new combat aircraft, called the Hurjet, will design to provide advanced training of military pilots and enhanced mission performance to the air forces on the battlefield. On the basis of the new aircraft will be developed new advanced jet trainer and light fighter aircraft.

According to the Turkish media, the Hurjet will be equipped with modern flight control system designed to operate at speeds of Mach 1.2 at a maximum altitude of 45,000 feet.

The fighter variant of the Hurjet trainer jet will have nine weapon hardpoints and attachments for a 3-tonne payload. It can be deployed in ground support roles, including air-to-ground attack, tactical, close air support and interdiction with precision guided munitions.

Some source reported that the Hurjet aircraft possibly equipped with new Ukraine-made Ivchenko-Progress AI-222-25F turbofan engines. The engine was originally intended for the Russian Yakovlev Yak-130 and Chinese Hongdu L-15 trainer aircraft.

It seems suited for the advanced jet training and close in air support roles. It is really good step especially before embarking upon the arduous task of developing the next gen (5th gen) A/C TFX though I see both projects running in parallel but a lot of interaction may occur between the projects. How many fighter they can actually build. From fifth generation TFX to medium combat aircraft in short time. It will be interesting if Turkey really complete their dream. I support and best wishes for our Turkish brother.

To complete aircraft development in a timely manner, often it becomes essential to decouple the engine development from the A/C. This has been the case even for China. Engine development is a huge project in itself and sometimes even more complex than the rest of A/C combined.

I don't want to be seen as a bad cop but there is no way for Turkey to buy JF-17. At this point, Turkey cannot go for old generation aircraft, also there are two different projects to modernise Turkish airforce;

1) F35, to replace F-4
2) TF-X, to replace F-16

Even if we couldn't get F35 which is highly unlikely, we would go for J-31 (with Turkish avionics installed) instead of JF-17.
