The Obama administration is trying to convince the US Congress to approve the sale of spy drones to Turkey for its campaign against Kurdish rebels, the Turkish president was quoted as saying Tuesday.

“Actually the administration has a positive stance (over the sale),” President Abdullah Gul was quoted as telling the Anatolia news agency in Chicago where he was attending a NATO summit.
“They (the administration) are trying to convince the Congress,” he added.
The United States has deployed Predator drones to Turkey from neighboring Iraq for surveillance flights in support of Ankara’s fight against Kurdish rebels, Pentagon announced in November.
After US forces withdrew from Iraq in December, the four American unmanned aircraft were shifted from an air field in northern Iraq to the Incirlik air base in Turkey.
But Turkey wants to buy armed drones whose sale depends on an approval from Congress amid concerns that pro-Israeli lobbies may hinder such a sale due to Ankara’s tense relations with the Jewish state.

A botched air raid launched by the Turkish military that killed 34 civilians in December may also complicate further sales.
Gul met with US President Barack Obama on the sidelines of the NATO summit late Monday.
“I’ve repeated our demands,” said Gul. “It is necessary to trust, not envy such a country, which is an important ally. As you know, President Obama, Secretary of State Clinton and her assistants are doing their best.”
Gul declined to say how many drones Turkey wants to buy from the United States.
The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey and much of the international community, took up arms for Kurdish independence in southeastern Turkey in 1984.
It sparked a conflict that has claimed about 45,000 lives.

I have just read a news about drones sales. It was saying that the jewish lobby blocking the drones sales. One of the high ranking general of air forces told Haaretz newspaper that "We are worried about the drones sales to Turkiye. It the US sells drones to Turkiye, this will change all balances in the middle east. Therefore, this may lead to arming in Middle East". In my opinion, this is very logical that Israel does not want Turkiye to have those drones for terror fight. When I think that Israel supports PKK under the table, it makes sense so much. Drones are sine qua non for Turkiye to combat with terrorism. Whether with the US help or not, I think Turkiye will develop her own armed UAV sooner or later.

Israeli drones are not armed, we had ordered Israeli UAV but after Davos and Mavi Marmara incident the relations with Israel deteriorated and we decided to not buy any UAV from Israel. As you may know, we already develop ANKA UAV better than Heron, but we have not improved the armed UAV yet. That is why Turkiye pushes for armed drones sale.

We must activate our and Israeli lobby on this.

Any such potential sale of hi-tech equipment is likely to end up in the hands of the Pakistanis (Indian concern) or be used against the Israelis (Israeli concern).

Dude, the demand is not only for spy drones but also more importantly armed drones. For Turkiye most important one is armed drones. As I said, we already developed our UAV.

We must activate our and Israeli lobby on this.

I can understand your concern. it is legitimate. When Turkiye starts using ANKA UAV, there is no doubt in my mind that it will be sold to Pakistan. It is so legitimate, too. Turkiye-Pakistan relationships are strong and both nation regard each other as brother. You see what I mean.

But I do not think Indian`s lobby is strong enough to block this sale.

Please do some research. Indian lobby in the US is the next best after the Israeli lobby.

I can`t see Indian lobbies here:disagree: I think you just overestimate your country. After Israeli lobbies, the strongest ones I think Irish, Armenian, Greek etc. but not Indian

Buddy, it is for MQ-9 reaper and the MQ-1 predator both are armed. We already operate unarmed Heron from Israel.
