TOP BRASS INTERVIEW: CNS Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi

Which is more likely and logical

At times I wonder why can hangoor be of the same class as that of new Australian subs that can live on aips for 90 days

Hi,

Indeed---90 days would be an absolutely terrific capability for a non nuc sub to stay submerged---.

Many a years ago---I had written multiple times to split the deal of 8 subs in two deals---.

The first deal would have had 4 subs---4---054 type frigates and 2 sqdrn's of JH7A's---then before the delivery of the 4th sub---do another similar deal for 4 more---.

Navy---in their own wisdom has now done a deal for 8 subs together and 2+2 type 054's---. The naval strike mission aircraft are missing over here---which were the most important part of the Troika---.

One day the navy did not have the funds---the next day they are signing for 8 subs and 4---054's---one begs ask the question---that indian submarine popping up close to pakistan's maritime boundary really did the trick---.

Thanks to Indian navy---indeed thank you very much---.

The mercy and help from Allah comes in strange ways---. I am at time just simply flabbergasted how the Almighty gives us ways and means and resource from the actions of our enemies to enhance our security---.

Just sit back and imagine---8 brand new modern aip subs---4 brand new frigates---and that is on the top tier---and we are not talking about the other procurements---.

CNS Abbasi mentioned in his interview to ADJ that the PN was looking for more LRMP aircraft to supplant the P-3C PUP fleet. This should give an idea about PN's airborne ASuW plans for the future.

For the PN to have JH-7A like ASuW capability, I believe there are three hindrances:
  • Cost of procurement / induction.
  • No experience in operating fighter/strike aircraft, its like raising a new air force.
  • Infrastructure constraints at PNS Mehran (Karachi) and PNS Siddiq (Turbat) to support 2x squadrons.
I believe it would be more feasible to increase PAF's anti-ship capability, the Exocet equipped Mirages at Masroor can be replaced by HD-1A equipped JH-7A's (at least 2 per aircraft); a new airport is planned for Gwadar, so PAF could establish an airbase by adding infrastructure at the existing location.

Both airbases will be very close to the coast and with long range supersonic missile equipped strike aircraft will serve as a conventional deterrent against IN.

Your thoughts.

Thanks for the tag.
PN is already paying paf for operating a squadron of mirages stationed at masroor . Instead of JH 7 it would be better to go for J 16, su 34 or su 35 . For J 16 u just have to pay russians some royality.
Ideally we should get 3 sqn's of strike platform.
One stationed at masroor
2nd one Ideally at bholari
And 3rd one in pasni.
U might ask why I am saying pasni , its that because we have some infrastructure there in place before it's status as FOB was revoked . If I am not wrong we got 8-12 pens there already and cheery at top we already have HLR there in place so no issue of radar coverage.
Although Paf asked for land in gawadar and paf got a small setup there as well but it's better to be in outskirts rather then inside City centre.

Paying PAF for operating an ageing squadron of Mirages, each of which can't carry more than one AM39 Exocet ?

Exocet (range: 50 km) is restricted to the Mirage's centerline pylon.

Which aircraft is another debate. I will be satisfied with any twin-engine that carries at least 2 HD-1A. :D

If you consider A2G strike requirements, Pakistan needs more than 2-3 squadrons.

6x Mirage squadrons are based at two airfields (Rafiqui & Masroor), why not establish new infrastructure to base these at 3 different locations?

BTW, any idea about the current status of Shamsi?

Fortunately or unfortunately:p:

U are right but we need atleast 3 sqn's of strike AC's

Satellite status but Dalbadin is upgraded toFOB

The PN might have looked into buying 4 additional F-22Ps, but it dropped that idea and went with 4 054A/Ps and 4 customized MILGEMs instead. The only thing left for the F-22P now is upgrading it, otherwise, the focus would be on the new ship designs.

What about new LRMPAs?

Hi

once you have an adequate number of larger frigates—-then you can start to add F22 type / size frigates.

There always a solution to a problem.

One has to re-think and re-adjust the game plan.

Atleast not in near future. PN might opt for converting two more ATR-72 into MPAs.

Ever wondered what will happen to OHP in our fleet? Will it will be upgraded too or will it be replaced by DDG in coming future?
