Three dead in attack on polio team in Karachi's Qayyumabad

KARACHI: Three people, including two women, were killed when a polio team was attacked on Tuesday in Karachi's Qayyumabad area, DawnNews reported.

The attack comes a day after Sindh health authorities began to inoculate some 7.6 million children of the province with polio vaccine as part of a nationwide drive that is to continue until Thursday. The first day of the immunisation campaign had concluded without any untoward incident.

The children of Sindh are among the over 33 million Pakistani children who are being administered with anti-polio vaccine during the National Immunisation Days (NIDs), scheduled to continue until Jan 23.

Pakistan is one of only three countries in the world where polio is still endemic, but efforts to stamp out the crippling disease have been hit by repeated attacks on health teams.

Officials blame the violence and suspicions about the vaccine for a surge in cases.

I thought the polio workers were only being targeted in the FATA and KPK. Is this the first time they have been targeted in KArachi, or has it happened before as well.

Polio has almost been eradicated from our planet. Only three countries, including Pakistan still has active polio cases pop up periodically. It is sad that the terrorists do not understand the implications of this dilapidating disease. Do they care about the children of Pakistan? We don’t think so! What would one expect from this evil group that only looks at children one way; “walking bomb!” Children are the future of any nation and this enemy of humanity has made it its one of its mission to destroy the children of Pakistan any way they can.

Targeting polio workers is not only absurd, but also absolutely evil. Our hearts go out to the families of the selfless polio workers. They are the real heroes. It is the cowards who attack them. We condemn these attacks and stand by the people and security forces of Pakistan. The resolve is to eradicate polio from our planet and bring about peace that everyone so desires. Rest assured, together we shall achieve our goals.
