A new sculpture of a woman wearing a Hijab, believed to be the first of its kind in the world, will be unveiled in Birmingham next month.
'The Strength of the Hijab' was designed by renowned artist Luke Perry to celebrate women who wear the headscarf.
Commissioned by the Legacy West Midlands charity, it is believed to be the first sculpture in the world of a woman wearing the head covering, worn by many Muslim women.
The steel sculpture is five metres tall, weighs around a tonne and is due to be installed in Smethwick in October.

Mr Perry said: “The Strength of the Hijab is a piece which represents women who wear hijabs of the Islamic faith, and it’s really there because it’s such an underrepresented part of our community, but such an important one.
"They need visibility, it’s so important, so working with the community to come up with the designs has been really exciting because we didn’t know what it was going to look like until now.“
"The location of where it’s going is Smethwick, [where] there’s a humongous part of the community that is from the Islamic faith.“
"They wear the hijab as part of their community, and it is really underrepresented.“
Mr Perry was helped to design the 'Black British History is British History' sculpture, which was installed in Winson Green in May.

That piece was defaced shortly after it was installed, but while Mr Perry acknowledged the new sculpture could be “controversial”, he said it was important to represent everyone who lives in the UK.

He said: “There’s a possibility that this piece could be controversial for many different reasons.

"I don’t feel like any of them are valid, but people do, there are a lot of people who object to the differences that we have in our communities, and would like them to be more divided."

It’s what puts the great in Great Britain.

It looks....so ugly :S

By the way Mr.Perry, did you join the harem as a eunuch?

Mr Perry?

I think it looks fabulous , showcases the multi cultural dynamics of U.K. and kudos to the British to include all women no matter race creed or colour and to exclude none .

Also for especially riling up Small minded people from small pointless countries is an added bonus , closet racists who spend their time passing off racist remarks to feel better about ones selves like yourself .

British do not really care what a woman wears or doesn’t wear as brits are big proponents of freedom of choice to do or not to do .

They made the women face as unhappy and afraid as if it is a symbol of oppression like what some if not majority of Westerners population like to think. Some people in the West with deep knowledge of course understand that Hijab is show of love from women to their God

Huge 16ft sculpture celebrating Muslim women in the Black Country takes shape

Artist Luke Perry said inspiration for his piece came from speaking to Muslim women in the area who felt 'under-represented'

An incredible 16ft steel sculpture celebrating Muslim women in the Black Country is taking shape. The huge piece of artwork, named 'The Strength of the Hijab', will be moved to its permanent home near Brasshouse Lane, Smethwick, later this year.

It depicts a Muslim woman wearing a hijab with the words 'it is a woman's right to be loved and respected whatever she chooses to wear' inscribed across its base. Artist Luke Perry said inspiration for his piece came from speaking to Muslim women in the area who felt "under-represented".

The talented sculptor said that - despite a large Islamic following in Smethwick - they were saddened that "nothing looked like them". The artwork will provide "visibility" for Muslim women and show they too are "powerful, beautiful and strong", he added.

The idea for the piece came from speaking to Muslim women who I work with at Community Connect Foundation. I asked them what artwork they would like to see and they talked about how they have no representation; nothing that looked like them.

"They want to be able to show their children things in the environment which makes them feel connected, important and gives them pride. Not just endless history on rich white men.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder

Modern stylish contemporary art work is not to everyone’s taste and living in U.K. one becomes accustomed to striking thought processing sometimes shocking , thought provoking art .

Remember the U.K. is the style icon of the western world , a trend setter in style and fashion who’s culture the whole world apes .

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but there is also a general concept of beauty.

Sculptors in the Arabic world have made beautiful statues of Saladin in Syria,Saddam in Iraq,Ibn Khaldoun in Tunisia. Arabs can sculpt beautiful masterpieces about Arabic or Islamic history.

And here you have a British hippie making that ugly thing to honor Muslim women.

It reminds me of this:
