The Ottoman sword - a cut and slash weapon

The Gladius was successfully proved itself in every battlefield but the fact remains that a weapon is only as good as the man who yields it. Valens was a poor leader. you can't blame the sword
Valens was not a poor leader as you suggested. He was an experienced commander of the Roman legions, fought with rebels, Goths and the Persians. The soldiers under his command were also highly seasoned veterans. However, the Vandals with cavalry and longswords signalled the end of the Roman legion dominance.

Best against what? It can't cut through plate armor and is quite brittle.

Best because of its allmost perfect processing, just watch a docu about making traditional japanese swords and you will see what i mean.
All this traditional made swords are a masterpiece.

Valens made crucial mistakes at Adrianople:

1.He didn't wait for the armies of his nephew Gratian who was marching to join him from the West.
2.He commited its entire force on the attack on the goths laager without taking any precautions to defend himself if the goth cavalry arrived. It did and it was a massacre.

If the goths would have outclassed the romans in warfare they wouldn't have been defeated by the western emperor Gratian in 381.They were though.
