I remember the night when the coup was progressing. I also remember Kemalist supporting the coup all the way through until things start changing. Now the Kemalist are accusing Erdogan to have staged it. Erdogan's right-hand man got killed on that night, one of them is his campaign managers who helped Erdogan win elections after elections.
After the coup, Erdogan only went after Gulen and his followers and still Kemalist blame Erdogan. If I was Erdogan i would have gone after the Kemalist as well and what they stand for because if they had the chance they are far worse than Gulen. Afterall Gulen is only the second deep state of the republic after the first Deep state who were the Kemalist.
Every single question about the coup can be answered like how did the MIT know in advance about the coup? Well... you have to understand that the MIT is continuously is tipped off about terrorist orgs and events all the time and not all of them are true.
On the day of the coup, a low ranking gulenist in the army broke rank with his co-gulenist after finding out about the coup as he couldn't accept such a drastic event and decided to tip off the MIT about the coup and the timing. Gen. Akar was briefed about it so he announced his orders to the Air force to stay down that night.
From Akars announcement the Gulenist was panicking that their plan was leaked and therefore started the coup 3 hours early however this created other problems such as not enough time for all the gulenist faction to be notified about the new timing. Discordancy was the main reason why the coup failed as different factions of the Gulenist worked at different times, they couldn't work harmoniously together to make an impact. Notice how the gulenist assassination team arrive late to Erdogan's hotel? because that faction only knew about the original time of their plan and not the recently updated version.
The biggest fault of Fidan and Akar was that they did not take the tip-off warning seriously earlier in the day as they probably didn't envisage the depth of the plan and understandably have similar sort of tip-offs every now then.
The Gulenist needed to take such a gamble while they can as they are being pushed out of every state organ one by one by Erdogan and they were about to be replaced in the military the following month. Erdogan was viciously attacking them in every circle and corner, blocking the organisation's ability to function and expand while secularist groups such as chp were defending them up until the coup.
