Textbook biases: ‘Our schools are extremism factories’

its same in India ,we just have an additional disaster management in senior school ... i wish to ask if sports, Literature and art, safety education, labor activities are these completely separate major subjects , coz although technically they exist in India no real education takes place , it' s a persons own initiative that might make him really educated in these field in school .
Yes they are separate major subjests, sports and iformation & PC operation are all 2 academic hours one week, Literature and art, safety education, labor activities are 1 academic hour one week

@pak-marine I want to see specific examples of what is wrong with our textbooks. We can discuss these on a case by case basis individually.

tribune is a reputed media outlet , i know some extracts 1 prime time was teaching kids about mehmod gaznavi i remember reading in books how courageous he was and how he took all the gold from somnath temple after 17 attempts whereas in reality the guy was a Big time robber and bandit .. !

Wow what a bull **** article. Islamic studies should be removed, why? Go fck your self if you don't like it. We are a Muslim majority nation and we do as we please. We study our religion in our schools. If the so called minority, who isn't even relevant to the majority of the population and their issues, doesn't like it, then That is their problem. It is they who are being intolerant towards our religion and our aspiration to get educated in our religion.

Tribune lost credibility for me.

No body really cares about the gold hoarding temples, ghanavi might be a robber, but those gold hoarders were no less robbers themselves.

Totally B.S article.

Currently the fashion in the world is the more you bash Pakistan the more you get paid, the author just wanna earn a quick 5 cents.

You know I heard, American aid would be given to the NGOs in Pakistan. Now what are those NGOs gonna promote? Human rights, I am guessing. Those human rights would be on line of certain values and those values would be, American..I assume.

What are American values? Gay Sex Rights? Have sex out of wed lock? Pornography? Freedom of speech, which is their excuse to bash Prophets? Rant about wearing hijab, rant some more about Muslims?

Which makes me wonder if American aid is even going to our economic development at all, or is it just being spent on changing our social values in Pakistan. This bizarre article could be example of it.

LAHORE:: The biases and prejudices in school textbooks are one of the main reasons for the radicalisation of young people and poor quality of education in Pakistan, said academics and civil society activists at a conference here on Wednesday.

“Discrimination is a national issue and these discriminatory texts are a constant threat to our society,” he said. “I believe that all the primary schools in our country are factories fuelling extremism in our children.” Peter Jacob of the NCJP said that school textbooks painted non-Muslims as the enemy. “We want our teacher to tell our children that minorities or people from other religions or countries are not our enemies,” he said.

“People here who used to deny that Pakistan was an extremist society no longer deny it after Gojra and the Asia Bibi and Rimsha [blasphemy] cases.” Other speakers said that the best way to counter the extremism was through good teachers and good schools. “Educationists must play their role in changing minds through education. I believe our generation needs values more than anything else,” said Dr Christy Munir, the principal of FC College.

“The only way we can become a progressive nation is to be an educated nation. We know that the only tool we have against extremism is education and if there is no education, there will be no peace,” said Father Emmanuel Yousaf, a peace activist.

“There is a huge difference between early and current society. Everyone should respect the changes in society and one should not impose his or her beliefs on others,” said Syed Nisar Safdar, a Supreme Court advocate and social activist.

The speakers said that current education and curriculum policy should be reviewed to remove discriminatory teaching materials and practices. Besides imparting knowledge, textbooks and teachers should focus on teaching students universal humanity and responsible citizenship. Religious education should be removed from public schools, or at least minority students should get an equal opportunity to study their own religion. And the role of religious minorities in the creation and development of Pakistan should be incorporated in the syllabus, the speakers said.

Around 100 people attended the event at Ambassador Hotel.

what is gold hoarding? You mean every treasury in the world is hoarding gold? pathetic justification for robbery. A modern day equivalent would be Afghanistan army emptying Pakistani treasury and Pakistanis celebrating it.

When you hoard gold, it means the gold is not in circulation within the economy. Having a treasury does not mean the gold is hoarded since it is circulated by paper money.

If I go by the posts of Indians on Pakistani forums and newspaper reports, I have not seen more hateful, radical and biased people on earth than Indians.

Before you even begin to criticize us, look at yourself first. You need to change your school syllabus.

Our text book main fault is that they dont teach Pakistaniat. If that was the case, we would have been one nation in 65 years. We still identify ourselves by what language we speak and what province we come from. This is the main fault of our text books and syllabus makers.

Not sure about "punitive" steps.

More emphasis on social habits, arts, and good citizenship will suffice.

For example

1. Chinese school system does allow students to learn a musical instrument. Pakistanis definitely need to adopt this practice.

2. Cleanliness - educating students as to how to handle personal hygiene and more importantly cleanliness in the street / village/town/city could need a major update.

3. citizenship - what that heck that means. Pakistanis needs HUGE emphasis on it, so they quit looking at fellow citizens through the lenses of religion, race, class, caste, tribe, or ethnicity.

things like that.

Peach to you :)

You pick up just one line from the whole post? totally out of context.

You my dear are walking the line of Islamist conspiracy theorists.

Sadly.
All this has been part of CBSE Curriculum (as of 2006 :ashamed:)
1. Music/Sports or other Extra Curricular activities( Had Sports and Cursive Writing)
2.Cleanliness - Taught under Moral Science
3. Part of Social Studies under Civics.

:what:

Indian school books are near perfect.

Pakistan can copy them verbatim and it would make for a better Pakistan.

Indians are champions of hypocrisy. Even if Pakistan has textbook bias, all nations distort the truth. They aren't alone. For instance, in America, we are taught the U.S. won World War 2, completely ignoring the brutal Eastern Front, and all of the contributions of the Soviets. Indians if anything should look at their own houses before attacking others. And yes I know the date, but I doubt it's any different now *(also not allowed to post links, so remove the spaces, and parentheses)*. Indian apologists attack in 3..2..1...

Perhaps the confusion created by these textbooks is best illustrated by @Chak Bamu's own post. Teaching children universal values is an excellent idea. Does teaching them that one religion is legitimate, and that the followers of all others are enemies in the making amount to a universal value that should be taught? Or that the country's existence is defined by the need to be different and separate? If so, how will the children taught like this ever look at anyone not a Pakistani Muslim with anything but suspicion and hatred?

Is this what is good to seek and to achieve?

Assumptions, sound bites, and prejudice. Is that all you can manage? Seriously, I thought you could do better. You are a scholar, and I expect better than this from you and I wonder what could have motivated you to write such a substandard post. I am not saying this out of ego - you can slander all you want. I am just surprised at superficiality of what you have written.

Spoken like a true Indian intellectual (read and Indian newspaper guy who is utterly un-educated about Pakistan).

Oh Bhai logo,

Pakistanis it seems like too secure and too sure and thus too full of $hit.

This is why, Pakistanis kids grow up on conspiracy theories straight from the Islamist and Communist @rses.

That my friend is the true source of all the ills that Pakistan is suffering.

Our youth is so sure about Islamist causes and thus too full of $hit that we claim to be more faithful to Palestine cause, even more than Palestinians

We are more faithful to iranian cause, even more than Iranians themselves.

We are more faithful to Makkah Madeena, even more than Saudis.

We as a $tupid @rsed nation, were more faithful to Ben fing Laden than the Arabs themselves.

We were more with Sad-Damn (big billboards before GW-1 on Pakistani roads) than Iraqis themselves.

Need to see more examples?

god help us that our $tupid government added more faithfulness to world over causes when they exploded nukes.

Talib@stards are the lot who think in their pee-brains that they can take on the mighty America. They are mad as hell with the rest of Pakistan as to why we do not use the ultimate weapon and rid the world of all the "Western evil". and surprisingly majority of the $tupids in our nation agree with them.

Can you imagine, the level of confidence (misplaced that is) to do so?

I mean most of the Indians would be $hitting in their pants if a single drone was circling over India.

And here these $tupid @rse Talib@stards who are getting daily "injections" of hell fire and they are still on.

What we need is to be a little less "secure" about the future of Pakistan, and a bit more "realistic" about the world.

And I do not know if any text book can help alleviate this dreadful condition.

Only

God can help us and bring us back to our senses.

peace

The examples given abt being more loyal to others than Pak speak of the point I was trying to make.

Why would a man look outside unless he is getting ' programmed' by religious & other outsiders into believing that Pak stood for religion and since the Govt / State is not doing what it stood ( or was created ) for one must bind with those who think alike outside the nation.

As regards a single drone over India - I am sure it would have been shot down.
