The members of the Missile Technology Control Regime, a key anti-proliferation grouping, have agreed to admit India, diplomats said, in a win for Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he meets President Barack Obama in Washington on Tuesday .

The diplomats, with direct knowledge of the matter said a deadline for the members of the 34-nation group to object to India's admission had expired on Monday. Under this so-called 'silent procedure', India's admission follows automatically.

The major breakthrough comes days after India announced that it is subscribing to 'The Hague Code of Conduct' against ballistic missile proliferation, which is considered to be complementary to the missile technology control regime ( MTCR ).

India had applied for its membership last year.

But it was facing strong opposition from a few member countries of the MTCR where decisions are based on consensus.

The Obama administration has strongly backed India's membership into MTCR and three other export control regime — Australia Group, Nuclear Suppliers Group and the Wassenaar Arrangement.

Established in April 1987, the voluntary MTCR aims to limit the spread of ballistic missiles and other unmanned delivery systems that could be used for chemical, biological, and nuclear attacks.

The MTCR regime urges its 34 members, which include most of the world's key missile manufacturers, to restrict their exports of missiles and related technologies capable of carrying a 500-kilogram payload at least 300 kilometers or delivering any type of weapon of mass destruction.

Since 2008 India has been one of the five countries that are unilateral adherents to the MTCR.

After MTCR's announcement, India and the US are expected to fast-track their discussion on sale of Predator series of unmanned aircraft for the Indian military.

The Predator drone, which recently eliminated the Taliban leader in Afghanistan, is the preferred tool of the CIA.

Membership into MTCR is a huge boost for India's ability to procure this capability.

nice 1, but I don't think we'll get the armed version, it'll be for surveillance only.

What if Pakistan shoots down Indian drone? Since US and Musharaf may have some sort of agreement on drone strikes even our shamsi base was used to carry out strikes. But for India i don't think so Pakistan Govt or army tolerates this.

Likely we may get armed versions too.
But the real question is, India takes the risk of retaliation?

well, if we send it into Pakistani airspace, I fully expect you guys to try and shoot it down, not very different from a mig29 or sukhoi in that sense. :P

I don't think we are going to go for it. In case we opt it then we might use it in naxalaffeceted areas,in kashmir or for surveillance only. It is the same way your armed drone burraq cannot get in India.

Where exactly Pakistan figures in the OP or in comments

It reminds me of an old proverb

" Chor Ki Daadhi Mein Tinka " :p:

I am watching your posts on different threads. Sorry to say you are not the person I should engage in discussion.

Simple answer is yes. However, there wont be any retaliation.
No Sir India is not US or we don't have any hidden or open agreement like we have with US, Retaliation would be massive i would like to have professional opinion from Mr. @Joe Shearer

Thank you for sparing your time to watch my post.

After reading your comment, I got the sense that this feeling is now mutual.

Thanks and regards

What kind of massive retaliation? I met with similar incredulity way back in 2010 when we were discussing Cold Start and fellow Pakistani members (it was kasrkin: damn not seen him around for sometime; any idea what happened to him?)were emphasizing the deployment of nuclear weapons at a tactical level. I had only one answer for that - no nuclear weapon is ever a tactical weapon, they may be used at a tactical level but then they become strategic. And India considers any kind of CBRN deployment be it tactical or strategic, counter force or counter value, as a strategic deployment and will respond massively to inflict 'unacceptable' damage. That, in effect, puts to rest the nuclear dimension until and unless over a couple of Islamists and convicts the Pakistani establishment is ready to risk an all out war with potentially uncontrollable consequences.

The same has been amply clarified by Shyam Saran .... in 2013.

Now coming back, since you are from a services background, you are aware of UAVs of both sides crossing the LC frequently for recce .... how many incidents of shooting them down have occurred till date?
