Tamil Nadu Assembly Calls for Probe Into Sri Lanka's Alleged War Crimes

CHENNAI, TAMIL NADU: The Tamil Nadu assembly today adopted a resolution for an international probe against Sri Lanka for alleged human rights violations and war crimes committed in 2009, which comes just a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi led National Democratic Alliance, and the Sri Lankan government, decided to renew efforts to resolve the ethic issue in the island nation.

In the resolution, the state government sought diplomatic efforts by India to change any possible pro-Lanka stand adopted by the US in a UN rights body.

Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa told the assembly that the US had now reportedly proposed internal probe by Colombo at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) and that it was "against natural justice."

The resolution moved by the chief minister said that India itself should move a "strong resolution" at the UNHRC along with the US seeking international probe against those who had committed human rights violations and war crimes in contravention to the international rules and conventions.

Unanimously adopted by the House, the resolution said, "The Tamil Nadu Assembly requests the Government of India that if America takes a stand supportive of Sri Lanka (at the UNHRC), then India must take diplomatic efforts to change that."

Ms Jayalalithaa recalled the earlier resolutions in the Assembly seeking to stop treating Sri Lanka as a 'friendly nation' in the context of the alleged atrocities on ethnic Tamils.

The resolution also said that the AIADMK government would not allow Sri Lankan players and officials to participate in the Indian Premier League sporting fixtures scheduled in Chennai.

Earlier, Opposition parties welcomed the resolution. "This is a timely resolution," DMK's senior leader Durai Murugan said.

The Sri Lankan government has faced accusations from international rights groups that some 40,000 Tamil civilians were killed in the final phase of the military campaign against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) that ended in May 2009.

This is only a dream. I would want to see the murderers to be punished.

That's what i'm also advocating.... Opening the dead issue is not going to do any dood to either of the three parties... Tamil politicians suck a big time.

You're right the SL government should re-arrest those thousands of LTTE cadres and execute them. Pity they gave them rehab and released them into the community.

Dude... I know the issue more than you... either TN or IN governemnt is in the position to something about it as of now. Rajapaksha out of the office doesn't mean he's one man... still he holds a good influence in Sri lanka touching him now only would come around and bite India.... Indian gov is well aware of it, that's why they've not opened this issue..

You have proven your zero knowledge about Srilankan politics. There is no difference on Rajapakshe or Ranil.Country's policies do not change by a change of a PM or President; Srilanka was never an ally to India. Hope you remember who they supported on Indo Pak war.

I am not against the project anyways :) To connect India with Srilanka you can only connect it from Tamilnad not from Kerala. There is no way Tamilnad govt going to give go ahead for this project.

Sri Lankan Parliament should call for international probe for Indian support of cross-border terrorism.

How they financed, trained and provided weapons to LTTE, must all be investigated!

.

And you do ? ? .. How ? You both are Indians.. So stop pretending to be a expert on Lankan politics.. One thing is certain though that SOME jokers in TN try to act as if they everything but they only know to make themselves butt end of the joke, Just like their politicians.. Case in point you

Realize in the end nobody really gives two hoots, Not Sri Lankans, Not GOI or the rest of India, Not majority of ordinary people of TN, Certainly not the US or the rest of the world.. Protest all you want.. Nothing will change
