Swedish defence minister Peter Hultqvist will be visiting India from June 9 to June 12, and it is likely that discussions between him and defence minister Manohar Parrikar will include the possibility of India re-looking at Saab’s Gripen NG single-engine light combat planes for the Indian Air Force (IAF).
What has led to the possibility of Gripen being back on the circuit is the fact that while the government has ordered 36 Rafales from French Dassault Aviation, outside the tender for the 126 MMRCA tender, Parrikar has been saying that the IAF may get low-end, light combat planes to replace its MiG-21 fighters.
Meanwhile, MoD’s official spokesperson Sitanshu Kar tweeted: “Swedish Defense Minister Peter Hultqvist to visit [HASHTAG]#HAL[/HASHTAG] and [HASHTAG]#BEL[/HASHTAG] in Bengaluru during his visit to India next week.”
Ahead of President Pranab Mukherjee’s visit to Sweden last week, secretary (West), ministry of external affairs, Navtej Sarna, had told mediapersons that “Swedish Defence Minister Peter Hultqvist, would be in India for two days beginning June 10 during which he would explore the possibility of engaging with New Delhi in the defence sector.”
With changed FDI rules and the ‘Make in India’ campaign, it is expected that the Swedish government would look at India as a manufacturing base, Sarna said.
During Mukherjee’s recent visit to Stockholm, the Swedish government had discussed the possibility of Gripen filling the gap in the IAF’s depleting fleet strength, owing to plans to phase out MiG-21s from 12 combat squadrons beginning 2016-17. Both countries have decided to restart the bilateral strategic dialogue after four years, besides finding ways for investment by the Nordic country in India’s defence sector under ‘Make in India’.

Not sure where this news has come from, but clearly, it either is a paid one or some some has a very shallow knowledge of the developments. Infact the content of the news itself contradicts its headlines.

The news makes sense as 36 rafales are now for specifies missions and india desperately needs to replace its ageing MIG 21/27 and tejas is walking like a tortoise. rafale follow up order for at least one squadron is in offing too probably in years time

Whether we like it or not...These kind of new will come now and then until MOD gives clear picture of whats going on with acquisitions...

Entertaining a Foreign Dignitary and discussing a matter doesn't amount to giving commitments. To Date only two things are clear and on record:
1. India in negotiations with DA for 36 no.s of Rafales.
2. DM stating that India is pursuing LCA program in all earnest to make up for the numbers. He hasn't stated that 90 remaining pieces (taking original 126 MMRCA number as base) will be purchased as a separate platform.

Also bear in mind that a lot of countries do offer their technologies but ultimately its up to the buyer to decide what is best for him.
By the looks of things (and following what has happened on front of Rafale purchase), there are only 2 scenarios:
1. India will buy remaining 90 or lower (to have approximately 5-6 squadrons) Rafales on Assemble/Manufacture in India with a private Aerospace manufacturer in India.
2. Rafale number may be capped at 60-70 odd, with remaining covered by LCA and LCA 2 based on development and FOC Clearances.

Rightly said Dada.

I don't think there is much substance to back this up....
I mean how many diff platforms can one have....

Su, Rafale, LCA, FGFA, AMCA, MiG .... koi bol raha tha F-35 bhi ayega.... bas karo ab...
aur Gripen koi low-end fighter nahin hai.... correct me if i'm wrong....

. . . .
First you abandon a deal in favor of local replacements and then you start talking about another platform to import.

No one abandoned the deal for 'local replacements'. LCA mk1 order is still 40

talking about another platform to import-these are only rumors
