Strong navy needed to guard maritime interests: PM

Ok, I dunno much about Nawaz Sharif, but even his statements aside, what was PN doing when the sea routes were blocked?

YOu have to remeber SU pakistan navy at that time was not that strong and if they engage they will loose their navy as well as their trade

But now a days It is coming up Inshallah !

Boosting the protection of Pakistan Trade in the sea
Why doesn't pakistan have a Naval Air Squadran instead.
Their Airforces are very strong in the region.

Pakistan navy has quality of weapons, India has quantity. I don't think Indian navy has any shield against Harpoon 1 and 2. Or French Exocet (upgraded version). Or even Chinese Silkworm series. Its too risky of India to come close to any Pak port.

hmmm I have been reading up on the OHP's that Pak has reputedly asked for.
hopefully the PN can get them upgraded to the same or similar standards as the RAN adelaide class ships with SM2 and or ESSM and seaRAM

Combine those with the chinese frigates and and the subs and the new AWACS systems, and you have a good strong force to protect the coast line.

I think the Pakistani PM is correct.

Pakistan should have a strong naval capability to protect her interests.

This is very important, especially with the strategical importance of the Gwadar Deep Sea Port.

Sena,

Are you aware of China's strategic importance in Gwadar port? What do you think about the role of China and Pakistan playing in constructing this port in order to serve their strategic and ecnomical needs.

I think Gwadar is very important to both China and Pakistan.

For Pakistan, during the Pak-India conflict India has blocked the Karachi port and seriously affected the Pakistan economy aswell as naval operations. By having the Gwadar port further away, this would give Pakistan additional time and space for her defence aswell as sharing the workload from the Karachi port on the economical front.

For China, China wants to protect her interests of the sea lanes, as the sea lanes carry a lot of Chinese resources like oil. By having the port, the tankers could dock at Gwadar and transport the resources by land from Pakistan to China instead of going the rest of the way by sea to China, this is very risky for China. This would also serve the economical interests of China.

For political reasons, China could use the Gwadar port to dock Chinese ships to protect the sea lanes of Chinese cargo and more hypothetically, keep India in check.

I disagree. Indian Navy, aside from being one of the largest in the world, is also considered one of the best. Its even considered better than China's! IN has been praised for efficiency and quality equipment during many navl exercises, even during the recent malabar exercise. IN has very deadly AShMs like Brahmos, good AA defences, and even a considerably good missile defence, with Barak missiles, Kashtan defence system and even Barak 2 on the horizon. There's no doubt that technologicaly IN is better than PN.

Its true that IN can be vulnerable to AShMs like exocet or harpoon, but the fact is that PN ships/subs have to get within range to fire. IN also has exocets, seahawks and brahmos missiles. Add to that better networking, and numerical superiority, its obvious IN can take on PN hands down.

Having the Chinese Naval post at Gwadar will not going to make any big difference. You should keep in mind it will also attract US to have keep check on chinese Naval Activity.

What kind of air defence will PN going to execute to defend Gwadar Port? I mean in previous conflict we had attacked Karachi Port using missiles.

The air defence will pretty much be done by the fighter aircrafts, and ships. The goal for the PN is to avoid a blockade, and i believe it very capable to do so. The Pakistan Navy is currently armed heavily to avoid any blockade, an effective ASM capability will insure that IN suffers heavy loses, hence IN will not be stupid enough to blockade until it has eliminated those capabilities.

As far as countering those missiles are concerned. There is no real solution to stop the incoming missile, its a war, it will go through anyways. However, phalanx, and other SAM batteries will insure that these missiles are countered. My tips for the PN would be to acquire more advanced SAM system that can be equiped on ships to further enhance its defence capability like inclusion of Barak type system for instance.

The PN air arm is not strong enough, and PAf cant be counted on to support PN in case of war, since PAF will have their hands full safeguarding Pak airspace and supporting army. And relying on air defence systems on board ships is not a good idea, since Indian aircraft armed with air-launched brahmos can take out ships from over 250 km. There was news about India acquiring tu-22M3 backfires for the navy. i dunno if the deal cam through, but if it did, then its bad news for PN since these supersonic bombers are ideal platforms for long range AShMs

PN needs a strong air arm.

SU-I have mentioned few systems that can intercept a Brahmos. There is no Backfire deal. the PN will be getting OHP's which will be upgraded with a number of Anti-air systems (seaRAM and essm for example) which are more than capable of taking out a brahmos. The top cover can be provided by the Hawkeye's and whatever new aircraft the PN acquires to replace the Mirages. The ground based defence can be enhanced with Radar guided guns and a SPADA or BAMSE unit which would provide defence against leakers

Actually it would make a big difference.if the Chinese ships are used to escort trade ships in and out of PAK then what will the IN do? attack the Chinese navy? It would require the IN to initiate hostilities against China. The U.S. will not get involved with that. So then one of two things would happen. The trade route would remain open. or china would be involved in the war.

As to your question regards to the air defence. the main element would be the Hawkeye 2000 which would obviously fly offshore with a CAP in order to intercept any intruders be they missiles or aircraft.

You are assuming that the chinese will send their ships to escort trade ships. I dont think so. usually sea routes are defended by the local navy. so in this case PN would have the duty to defend the trade ships.

Usually is the key here...for example Chinese ships could sail to and from ports the Chinese navy could claim they are looking after their own interests. If a few Pakistani ships slipped into the convoy how would any blockader know? That would free up assets for other operations and require the Chinese to do nothing other than escort the ships.

This is of course speculation but it has to be borne in mind that with all sides trying to keep or gain allies(in the new multi polar world) China would not allow a ally fall easily as it would affect their standing with their remaining allies.
