Should India spend Rs 1000cr on a single fighter jet?

Instead of tying TOT to its domestic development. India should just separate the two. buy for use while develop for technical advancement. Give that strategy a try.

Took India 30 yrs to build a 3rd generation fighter jet, I don't know how long will it take India to mature the key technology to build the 5 generation jet all by themselves. Even LCA need all kind of component from abroad to make it fly.

The investment for PAKFA is just a qualification bought to buy it, nothing more than that. If India didn't invest money, they won't get a 5th gen fighter anywhere else in the world. India is extremely afraid of sanction out of nowhere if they go for F35. When you are a cash cow means you don't have choices.

yes. all the investment to PAKFA is just an option fee to buy more in the future. So Russia comes out on the top in this deal. They make India pay for 50% of the development. India need to spend money to buy the plane that would allow Russia to make more money. And India get only the technology that Russians are willing to share. Indians may talk big here but are suckers in real life.

Are Indians good in reverse engineering??

A big no from my side..

When they fail reverse engineering they will give the following excuse:
1. reverse engineering is immoral
2 copy-cat is of low quality
3 China don't have chance to buy
When the real one comes, they will know how Chinese 'copy-cat' works out. At least we don't need to be taken as cash cow, all the money is used to develop our own military industry for future benefits. A simple understanding, but very hard for Indians to understand.

Don't worry my friend, Indians are very optimistic people. They even believe France will TOT everything they need.

If the deal become finalize any day France should announce holiday and name it Indian cow milking day...:dance3::omghaha:

India want to legally bind the France into teach India engineering how to build the Rafael in timely fashion, and France literally back off from the India demand, and tell them they not responsible for India build the Rafael in India. France can drag their feet with the TOT and not legally responsible for the failure of India build Rafael.

India is just completely incompetent in building a plane itself. It should just focus on lower end/lighter weight planes like LCA with mostly foreign components. If it take India 30 years to build LCA, it means that India do not even get the system's engineering right. That means know how to buy the right engine and the right systems for the plane. If India is struggling even in systems integration, it has a long way to go. They should decouple planes they buy for the AF from stuff they try to develop.

Order the f35 from US is the answer for India.

You hit the point.

Base on the track record of India's aerospace development, this is a no brainer. :)

They are complaining that the line is long. But they have to realize that if they don't step into the line sooner, the line is going to grow longer. F-35 should be the premier "inexpensive" fifth generation fighter out there. And if India is stupid enough to not to wait in line for it, its shooting itself in the foot.

F35 is very costly but very potent flexible fighter jet. Pakfa still along way to go, take f35 20 yrs to make the jet air worthy and multiple purpose fighter jet.

no, they won't. PAkFA is the only choice until now.

Because they know that US would not allow them to be a level 1 partner. So they think they are being a level 1 partner of Russia. And if they have any brains, they should realize that they are screwed. Like a girl riding a bus in New Delhi at night, screwed.

Yap, its indeed a multi-purpose plane. And it will be successful as this is the only focus of US military.

India think buy paying the Russian for the R&D on PAKFA, India will get all the key technology transfer from the Russian. Foolish to believe so.

No other nation can build an all purpose fighter jet, costly investment thought, over 600 billions dollars for the whole program.

Russia can use PAKFA to milk India. And India had shown that it liked to be screwed.

India have no other choice.
