President Donald Trump on Wednesday said that India "will soon find out" about his decision on the punitive CAATSA sanctions after India signed a USD 5 billion deal to purchase the much-vaunted S-400 air defence system from Russia.

Under the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act or CAATSA sanctions, which was amended early this year, only Trump has the authority for the presidential waiver to India on weapons deal with sanctions-hit Russia.

India last week inked a USD 5 billion deal to purchase S-400 Triumf air defence system from Moscow. The mega deal was sealed in New Delhi during the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin for the annual summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Asked about the agreement between India and Russia, Trump while interacting with reporters in the Oval Office of the White House, said, "India will find out. Aren't they?"

"India is going to find out," he reiterated in response to India specific question.

Asked when, he said, "You will see. Sooner than you think."

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was also in the room when Trump answered the question on CAATSA sanctions. Pompeo was scheduled to meet the president later.

Pompeo and Defence Secretary James Mattis had earlier argued the case for a waiver to India.

Last week, the White House had said that the US presidential waiver on weapons deal with sanctions-hit Russia is intended to "wean" countries like India off the Russian equipment.

"The (CAATSA presidential) waiver is narrow, intended to wean countries off Russian equipment and allow for things such as spare parts for previously-purchased equipment," a White House National Security Council Spokesperson had said after the conclusion of the S-400 contract.

The US embassy spokesperson in New Delhi had said that the CAATSA was aimed at Moscow and not intended to damage the military capabilities of its "allies and partners."

What is going to be India's response if she gets the hit?

What is going to be India's response if she gets the hit?

Continue as planned. US didnt put any meaningful sanctions on China for breaking CAATSA (sanction on a bank and some of its directors w.r.t any US presence and thats about it)....and that's China (who US sees as far larger threat than India). So very unlikely any US sanctions (if they happen) will be anything more than the China ones on the issue....probably lot less. Indian banks handling the Iran and Russian trade have very little international (US) exposure...and shell companies can be made as required too.

India will soon find out that it has been given a waiver by US.

What is going to be India's response if she gets the hit?
None needed. Because if USA imposes sanctions it will only be on UCO bank (payment handler with Russia). And UCO Bank has zero exposure to US financial system as confirmed in recent JP morgan report

India will cancel just like it canceled pakfa. And they will get a package of Thaad and PaC
Thaad and PaC are very costly systems. and US unlike Russia is not flexible with what we want to do with them specially local system integration

:usflag::usflag: Indian duplicity and third rate hypocritical Nazi behaviour has been caught out by good ol Trump. US should bring back all the outsourced jobs and manufacturing back to the US.:usflag::usflag:

Trump will not let go india without reminding who is the boss. Sactions are possible as @Nilgiri said

Possible yeah but probable ? Trump is been pushed by almost all its allies , he is too unpredicted .. but i do agree that Trump will not let go India without something , because its matter of prestige , If India manage to get away with this America will look even weaker .. lets not forget US is keep losing battle after battle on all fronts, From Crimea to Syria .

Sounds about right.

Donald Trump isn't really the kind of person who has "friends", he has people who are useful to him, and people who are not useful to him. Right now India is useful to him, whatever sanctions he places to soothe his ego won't have much material impact. They will piss off a lot of people though.
