New Delhi: Ruling out any change in its policy, Russia today said it is in talks with Pakistan for supply of Mi 35 defence helicopters but said it would do nothing "detrimental" to the strategic relationship with India.

Moscow's Ambassador here Alexander M Kadakin said that Russia had never imposed any arms embargo on Pakistan and that its technical and military cooperation with the country dates back to 1960s.

"We have not changed any policy, and contrary to press reports there has not been any embargo on Pakistan. We supplied to arms in Pakistan since early 1960s. This was sheer case of mis-reporting and over-reacting," he said.

He was reacting to reports from Moscow that Russia has lifted an arms embargo on Pakistan and the two countries were in talks over supply of Mi35 helicopters.

Russia has not supplied any arms to Pakistan but there have only been "initial" talks to supply Mi 35 helicopters, he said.

"We have not supplied, lately, any arms to Pakistan. Its not the arms, but its Mi 17 civilian aircraft. We are at the very initial stage of talks on Mi 35, but that is exclusively for anti-terrorist and anti-narcotics operation.

"There can be a wish list from Pakistan, but we have not reacted to that. It is a matter of negotiations," Kadakin said.

The envoy said that Russia saw supplying Mi35 helicopters as its contribution to the anti-terrorist and anti-narcotics endeavour.
"Russia, as a member of international coalition, treats is as a contribution to Pakistan's participation in anti-drugs and anti- terrorist operation."

He added that Russia was with India in its fight against terror and shall do nothing that will prove detrimental to the "deep and strategic" relationship with India.

"We shall never do anything, and it has been stated time and again by the highest level, which is detrimental to deep and strategic relationship with India. With India, we are its side of anti-terror campaign.

"Since there are no supplies of arms then how can they affect anything? One should understand that it is not that somebody is supplying to Pakistan. Nothing was done, nothing is being done and nothing will be done that will be detrimental to the deep relationship with Pakistan," the ambassador said.

Russia want Pakistan for better ties and it's Interest in Middle East. as US exit from Suadi and other gulf states and later on from Afghanistan will leave commanding Position for Pakistan as an Strategic Partner... so India is Left behind, and both China and Russia are in Pakistan's front for Strategic Ties.
What your say?

Russia will soon demand pakistan to help al assad

@$elf No issue in that,,, as India along with their Israeli and American bosses strengthening Syrian rebels and AL Qaida .... :)

I dont see any reason why Russia cant supply defensive weapons.

India has no role in Syria neither its gonna give India some geopolitical advantage

Then Pakistan would look somewhere else if Russia can't provide what they need. China for example. If a salesman doesn't provide, go to someone else.

They certainly can. My pov was Russia can/should provide weapons albeit defensive to Pakistan, I wont want to comment even if they provide offensive ones. Its a mutual interest and beneficiary to both.

Pakistan hasn't purchase anything other than MI-17s from Russian.
Russia has always given mix signals to Pakistan and at the end refuse to sell anything due to Indian lobbing.

Its is known fact that Russia wont do anything which will impact India, even if they see anything clearance has to come from India other wise its as good as a dead deal.similarly India wont do anything which will Impact Russia,India will take clearence if involves something remotly Russian, its not business ,its friendship which has stood the test of time.

That Ambassador is Crazy....Mi17 is a civilian a/c? I think he meant its a Transport a/c that too Military Transport.

Now Russia also have to re think, As modi is visiting America, as his first Official Visit after swearing as P.M instead of Russia, her Best and Viable Friend.... Russia has to move on to and Emphasize more on Arctic and Asia Pacific Region along with covering Central and Middle east ... for Which Russia will require Pakistan's Help , as USA required earlier for his Soldier's Release and other Agreements with Taliban and gulf regions....

We have a $30 billion agreement with them on PAKFA, now orders for MKIs exceeding 300 after the latest order of 40 more, developed Arihant with them, investing in GLONASS for military signals of satellites during wartimes, studying high profile join space missions with them, buy frigates worth billions of dollars from them for our Navy, most likely buy 197 Kamov LUHs from them and not to mention the dozens of JVs we have with them apart from massive surge in bilateral trade.

What gives you the inkling that they will abandon us? It is a bilateral understanding of 55 years, dude. That takes a lot of effort to build trust.

Russia is welcome to supply you anything tactical or defensive like using gunships and Mi-17s against TTP terrorists. But they respect our concerns as we respected theirs during Crimean re-union with Russia.
