Sweden only has 96 gripen C/D vs the over 1000 American f16s (not including the many other countries with spare f16s), spending the valuable time training on a jet with only 1/10th the availability for a relatively small performance difference just isn't worth it at this point in the war.

This is more of a symbolic gesture to tell the world (NATO included) that despite our size and smaller AF, they are behind the ally.
From a tactics standpoint, if the Russians cannot get air superiority over Ukraine battlefield because of strong air defences, why will Ukraine with F-16s get superiority over the battle feed since Russia has SAMs.
RuAF’s superior size of Air Force has not resulted in air supremacy. So that negates their use over battlefield. Then it would make sense that may be they are used for attacking beyond the immediate battlefield , deeper behind the front lines. F-16s don’t carry the Storm Shadow so the US must need to supply JASSM , but with a 500 mile range, it doesn’t add up that it would supply a platform that can attack Moscow.
A lot of Internet generals have been assuming that the Viper would be sent without compatible weapons, which is just insane. I'm pretty sure that the AMRAAM and the HARM would be included in the package at a minimum to ensure Ukraine, not Russia, has control of the airspace., it's less about being able to regain air superiority and more about forcing the Russian air force back even further to avoid the range of the AMRAAMs. Same with HIMARS (and now Storm Shadow), the change is about making operations even harder for the Russian military.
