Nothing new

NATO is not about democracy or socialism or communism.

Democratic is good but not a precondition.
NATO is a military bloc. One of preconditions requires the armies be controlled by civil governments.

In reality because every member has a veto right every member can request every bullshit as precondition, like the Turks asking the Sweden to impose anti terror laws, asking the US to deliver the F16s, asking the EU for visa free travel.
