Lahore: Punjab government is starting a new land record system to register properties using digital certificates instead of traditional manual records, or ‘Khasra numbers’, news sources reported on January 8.

The new digital certificates will be issued under the Punjab Urban Land System Enhancement Project – a new initiative that aims to modernize and improve the land management system in the province. The project, launched with the USD 150 million funding from the World Bank, will create a digital repository of land-ownership records using a Geographic Information System (GIS). The government will pilot the project in Jalalpur Jattan before rolling it out at a wider scale.

The new system will allow people to access information about the ownership of urban property at digital record centres throughout Punjab; this will also will include viewing land on Google Maps. The government is also working to reduce the influence of patwari system in urban land management in an effort to make the process more efficient and transparent.
