Tan? You need to ask the others, don't know how Fujian pronounce that character
陈水扁 ? are you joking? the guy is spending his time in jail and won't be out for a long long time.
The Taiwanese pinyin is much closer to that of the Mainland China.
For example, chen shui bian is practically the same Romanization as the mainland one.

Tan is based on the Hokkien Romanization of Chen, usually in places like Malaysia or Singapore.
I met some Chinese Malaysians who had that surname, it's written the same as mine.
The DPP is gaining the upper hand, but it cannot do whatever it wants. If its cross-Straits policy reminds people of what the former leader Chen Shui-bian propagated, it will be questionable how long its good fortune can last. If the DPP wants to regain the helm, it must keep in mind that the progress in cross-Straits relations can never be reversed.
Taiwan is a much smaller society compared with the Chinese mainland, but how Western democracy develops on the island could serve as a reference to the endeavors of Chinese society in pursuit of democracy. Yesterday saw a debate in the Chinese mainland's public discourse, in which many liberals took the advantage to publicize their values and said they believe Taiwan is a role model for the mainland.
@terranMarine ,
In my opinion , Chen was unfairly targetted since back in 2010 the Taipei District Court declared him not-guilty of charges; that's why they changed his sentence from life sentence to 20 years. Still, that's excessive. During his presidency, Taiwan's economy was impressive. Compare that to the current presidency of Ma, it has floundered.
That's interesting.
But yea, 陳 is also a Japanese surname, tho its pronounced as 'Chin'.
I thought so too, both speak Mandarin so pin yin would be very closely the same compared Cantonese with Mandarin.
I know some Japanese people living in Hong Kong.
Their surnames have 2 characters, it's really interesting.
I like this one you told me about before: "田中" (Tanaka). It sounds really nice, "Tian zhong", and the meaning of the characters is good as well.
The southern Taiwanese are purely the descendants of the Min Nan groups, whereas the northern Taiwanese are heavily mixed with many different Chinese sub-ethnicities, although their accent and culture have also been localized.
