Featured Pakistan Navy Type 054AP Frigates - Update, News & Discussion

So looks like pn addressed all short coming of 054 by replacing radar and adding secondary volume search radar at the back

How do you PN replaced anything? I am surprised the max engagement of SAM is 4, which is better than what has been reported before (only 2?)

First, the specs of Type 054A in the "Top 10 Most Powerful Frigates in the World" is out-dated compared with lastest variant. And the fire control radar was also referred to older Russian made one that can guide only 1 missile.

Second the radar equipment on type 054A are made in China, not imported Russian radars. They may looked alike, but they are not the same.

"The SARH system needs only one radar set to a wider pattern.

Continuous-wave radar[edit]
Main article: Continuous-wave radar
Modern SARH systems use continuous-wave radar (CW radar) for guidance. Even though most modern fighter radars are pulse Doppler sets, most have a CW function to guide radar missiles. A few Soviet aircraft, such as some versions of the MiG-23 and MiG-27, used an auxiliary guidance pod or aerial to provide a CW signal. The Vympel R-33 AA missile for MiG-31 interceptor uses SARH as the main type of guidance (with supplement of inertial guidance on initial stage).

SARH missiles require tracking radar to acquire the target, and a more narrowly focused illuminator radar to "light up" the target in order for the missile to lock on to the radar return reflected off target.[4] The target must remain illuminated for the entire duration of the missile's flight. This could leave the launch aircraft vulnerable to counterattack, as well as giving the target's electronic warning systems time to detect the attack and engage countermeasures. Because most SARH missiles require guidance during their entire flight, older radars are limited to one target per radar emitter at a time"

There are 4 targeting radars on type 054A that provide illumination to HQ-16 SAM. The report on the previous page that stated 2 missiles can be guided meant ONE targeting radar can guide TWO HQ-16 missiles. The tageting radar on type 054A is not made in Russia, and they are not exactly a clone either but a Chinese made improved version with better capability.

Also I have not seen any official release from China in regard to ship based HQ-16 targeting radar, so even the above stated one radar able to guide two HQ-16 missiles is at best just an educated guess.

The truth can only be provided by Pakistan Navy or Chinese manufacturer.

Below is targeting radar for the land based HQ-16A aka LY-80.
" The radar guidance vehicle is equipped with an L band PESA that controls the missile launching and target illumination after the missile is fired. The radar has a range of 85 km and can detect up to 6 targets, track 4 simultaneously and provide fire control for 8 missiles.[2] "

It’s on open sources plus you can see the new radar on first ship for pn

an aesa radar similar to western mark 2 replaces current on Chinese ships plus type 517 at the back

Thanks a lot. What about the fire control radar (FCRs) - are they capable of engaging 2 or 8 in total as per @lcloo post above?

At the end of this video, you can see 3 HHQ-16 being launched in quick succession of a few seconds. The ship is an old type 051B destroyer #167, upgraded during MLU to type 054A's standard in air defence (radar and SAM).

This video shows 3 HHQ-16 can be guided at the same time for interception, with the same fire control radar of type 054A.

I would agree - 2 SAMs at a time is too less for ship this size with 32 ready to launch SAMs! But the real capability know how are definitely with PN or PLAN. Don’t expect PN to say anything, for example in recent HQ9P induction in PA, the ISPR press release reported it as 100+km HIMAD system, and left the rest out for IAF to guess or find out the hard way.

PNS Tughril

Nov 2, 2021
Pakistan Navy is set to induct PNS Tughril into her fleet on 8th November. PNS Tugril is lead-ship of Type-54A/P multi-purpose guided missile frigates manufactured by China.

Pakistan Navy signed contract for the procurement of two Type-54A/P frigates in 2017. In 2018, Pakistan announced procurement of two more type-54A/P guided missile frigates. These ships will be armed with state-of-the-art weapons systems and sensors. Importantly, PNS Tughril will be 1st Pakistani Warship capable of firing missile from VLS missile cells.

They are mistanding,it's true that each AJK-16 FC-RADAR can suport you shooting 1 or 2(under certain conditions) targets with launching 2 missiles, but 054A has 4 AJK-16 FC-RADAR totally....

Coming with 1130 and not 730 like f-22p

actually the F-22P have the 630s, not even 730s
Once these are inducted Hope they upgrade the F-22P frigates with the same radar and modern modern VLS.

is this because the PLAN is satisfied with the Type 052DL design and focusing on the Type 055? Or something else?

Also, is the PN wanted to buy the Type 052DL, what do you think the unit price would be?

1.F-22P do have 2X730 simplified version above the helicopter hanger.
2.PLN will purchase 8X055,12X052DL,20x054A block2 and some new 057 during the 14th Five Year Plan Period(2021~2025).

Your correct on the fist point, hold the sarcasm on point 2, just asking a question.
