Featured Pakistan Navy Type 054AP Frigates - Update, News & Discussion

I remember a year back (sorry to bore you folks) writing my concern on here about how Pakistan's greatest population centre is on the coast (Karachi), and how precious little there was to stop it being given on a platter to the Indian Navy. Just maybe either someone read what I and others wrote, or it was in the pipeline for a while. I just find it heartening and even wacky to think that maybe some ideas written on here do cross the minds of Pakistan's top brass.

But back to topic this for me honestly is the biggest and happiest news I have had the pleasure to read for a number of years, going as far back as the testing of Babur. Please hit a thanks if you agree.

Probable armament configuration:
  • 32 cell VLS (for firing LY-80N surface to air missile, ET-80 anti-submarine assisted torpedo, etc)
  • 100mm main gun
  • 2x triple torpedo tubes (ET-52C)
  • 2x quadruple anti-ship missile launchers (Harbah or C-802A)
  • 2x Type 730B CIWS
  • 1x 24-cell FL-3000N PDMS launcher.
  • ASW helicopter (Kamov Ka-28 or Z-9EC)

In October, the outgoing Chief of Naval Staff Adm. Muhammad Zakaullah announced that Pakistan had reached a deal to procure new frigates from China. Zakaullah did not specify the model of the new frigates or the number of ships the Pakistan Navy will be procuring. Reports from 2012 had pegged the Pakistan Navy procuring upgraded or improved versions of the F-22P.

If Shanghai TV is correct, Pakistan could be procuring one of the China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation’s (CSIC) 4,000-ton frigate designs. According to IHS Jane’s, the 4,000-ton frigate design is based on the Type 054A. It has an endurance of 21 days, length of 135 m, range of 4,000 nautical miles (cruising at 18 knots) and top speed of 26 knots. It has 32 vertical-launch system (VLS) cells, one 76 mm main naval gun, two 30 mm guns and a 24-cell FL-3000N point-defence missile system (PDMS).

The CSIC 4,000-ton frigate is available in two variants: one with a target-illuminator to guide the semi-active radar-homing (SARH) HQ-16 SAM. The second is without a target-illuminator, but it possesses longer VLS cells. The second variant appears to have been designed to carry SAMs with active terminal-stage seekers and potentially other kinds of missiles, such as land-attack cruise missiles (LACM).

CSOC 4,000-ton frigate with target illuminator.

CSOC 4,000-ton frigate without target illuminator, but with longer/higher VLS.

The latter variant is interesting in that it would maximize the utility of the 4,000-ton frigate’s use of active phased-array radar (APAR) and passive over-the-horizon radar (OTHR). Using the China Educational Instrument and Equipment Corp (CEIEC) SLR-66 as a benchmark, the frigate’s APAR could have a range of 280 km, while the OTHR would have a range of 500 km. The OTHR would provide the ship with stand-off range air and surface surveillance coverage, while the APAR can guide long-range SAM and/or AShM. The VLS cells would bode well for potential LACM usage (Pakistan has the 700-km range Babur 2). Pakistan could also configure the ship to carry long-range SAM for area-wide anti-air warfare coverage.

The caveat to this is whether Pakistan will in fact proceed with the CSOC 4,000-ton frigates as shown in the models, or a pared down model to reduce costs. However, if pared down, these ships are still large enough to be upgraded with APAR, OTHR and heightened VLS cells in the future.

This is LY 80 Missile I am pretty sure our engineers and scientist are capable enough to make Cruise missile and ballistic missile of this exact size which can get fitted into VLS of TYPE 54 and can be fired upon Indian cities

A true beast that PN deserve to own in the future.

Which version of HQ-16 Pakistan's Type 54A will use ? basic HQ-16 have range of 40 km where HQ-16A have range up to 70 km . It will be really game changer if it use the latter version of air defence missile.

The Type 054A is 140 meters long, 16 meters high, 31 meters high and moves to 4,000 tonnes full load. The ship has a range of over 4,000 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 18 knots.

For the time being, it is the best anti-submarine anti-submarine platform for the Chinese Navy, which has a complete dedicated suite including a hull sonar, a variable depth towed sonar, a sound control system and submarine communications, as well as torpedoes, ASROC Yu-8 and anti-submarine rockets.

The relatively low cost of operational operation, versatility and comfort, which are generally appreciated by the Chinese Navy and crews, make Type 054A an important vector in the composition of China's naval forces. and that the number of buildings built is revised several times upwards, from 24 originally planned to at least 28 today.

The hull number that will be assigned to this 28th Type 054A is not yet known, but knowing that all the 5xx numbers, so far dedicated to corvettes and frigates, are already used, it is not excluded that this ship will receive a shell number 500 or starting with 6xx.

The building is expected to join the Chinese Navy by the end of October 2018 according to our estimate.

The type 054A is definitely one of the most successful ship of PLAN

Plaan has extend the order to 32 now.

Plus

11 x 30 mm or 1130 gun system

I think with so many ships on order, the R&D overhead should have been amortized by now...meaning, the cost of the ship is now mostly the cost of the materials and production cost. My guess: the Type 054As have a pretty good upfront price, giving the PN lots of 'vertical room' for customization and upgrades (in the long-term).

PN should buy bigger & technologically advance navy ships, as it will strengthen our navy.
