Pakistan Navy test fire indigenously developed Cruise Missile with anti-ship/land attack capability

Pakistan Navy test fires an indigenously developed multi role Cruise Missile system. This missile is based on the Babur Cruise Missile family. It was fired from an indigenously built Fast Attack Craft. The missile is capable of destroying targets, both at sea and land.

What about range ?? Same 700 km or improved?

Is that a new thing that the same missile can target ships and land? Navel missiles have kinetic/penetrating warheads but for land you need ballistic. Is that a new technological cross-over that the same missile is capable for both types of operations?

The text does say it's a multi role system plus as far as i can recall, so far all versions of Babur have been tested against land targets.

Why do they need to be fired from missile boats and not from land?

Pakistan has land to sea attack missiles called "Herba" and this test is a further evolution of that missile. Pakistan can target any of India's floating assets without putting a single boat in water.

Indians are ill-informed and fed with stupid ideas. India doesn't know what it is trying to mess with. Pakistan may be economically weak (and that too temporarily) but on military front, it is more than a match for India.

I think the one you are referring to is 'Zarb'(Land based Anti-Ship Missile). It based on C602.
While Harba(the one which was tested yesterday) is based on Babur and is Ship launched Cruise Missile with Anti-Ship & Land Attack capabilities.

Pakistan’s Navy Test Fires Indigenous Anti-Ship/Land-Attack Cruise Missile
The test launch from a Pakistan Navy fast attack craft reportedly took place in the Arabian Sea on April 23.

The Pakistan Navy has successfully test fired an indigenously developed unidentified anti-ship/land-attack cruise missile from a fast attack craft in the North Arabian Sea on Tuesday, Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media arm of the Pakistan Armed Forces, said in an April 23 statement.

“The missile accurately hit its target on land signifying the impressive capabilities of the indigenous missile system,” the statement said. “The successful live weapon firing has once again demonstrated the credible fire power of Pakistan Navy and the impeccable level of indigenization in high tech weaponry achieved by Pakistan’s defense industry.”

Vice Admiral Kaleem Shaukat, the vice chief of the Naval Staff, witnessed the live firing onboard a Pakistan Navy ship, along with other senior officers and officials.

While not specified by ISPR, the surface combatant used for the test launch appears to have been an Azmat-class fast attack craft, three of which are currently in service with the Navy. The fast attack craft is based on China’s Type 037II Houjian-class missile corvette. While the first two Azmat-class ships were built in China, the third fast attack craft was assembled in Pakistan. The last Azmat-class corvette reportedly has been fitted with indigenously built dual-triple-cell missile launchers.

According to Quwa Defence News & Analysis Group, Pakistan’s Ministry of Defense Production had planned to develop an indigenous missile system for the Azmat-class by October 2018.

ISPR did not reveal the missile type tested on the April 23. The missile fired in today’s test could either be the Harba anti-ship and land-attack cruise missile (LACM/ASCM), which was last test fired in January 2018, or a sea-launched version of the Babur 1B LACM/ASCM. (A third possibility is a sea-launched variant of the Zarb land-based ASCM system.) The existence of the Harba LACM/ASCM was fired revealed in 2017. It is thought to be a long-range sea-skimming cruise missile with an estimated range of 450 to 700 kilometers. There is speculation that the missile is a derivative of the Babur missile series.

The Babur 1B was last test fired in April 2018. According to ISPR, the missile “incorporates advanced aerodynamics and avionics that can strike targets both at land and sea with high accuracy, at a range of 700 kilometers.” The statement notes that the terrain-skimming cruise missile “is capable of carrying various types of warheads.” In April 2018, Pakistan also announced the second successful flight test of the Babur-3 nuclear-capable submarine-launched cruise missile (SLCM). Both the Babur 1B and Babur 3 SLCM are reportedly nuclear-capable.

The Babur missile series is an essential component to Pakistan’s deterrence strategy.

Babur uses liquid fuel during the flight, and there is a weight-size-wingspan-warhead optimal ratio which Babur is tuned at. Increasing range would mean more fuel, which demands a longer/fatter missile which demand high speed or increased wing span, which in return will increase RCS and reduce agility. The only way to improve Babur's range would be to improve fuel efficiency or install a better booster and that will result in small improvements like 10-15% improvement instead of 100-150% improvement.

Consider there is an optimal size for a lion as well. When a lion gets bigger, its weight increases, agility decreases, it needs stronger skeleton to carry more of its own weight, which demands stronger muscles to move those bones and burns more calories moving around. Thus despite increase in size, its hunting ability would drop. That is why you do not see a zebra size lion in nature. They have to be small to be useful for themselves.
We can use solid fuel for it

This is an evolved 3rd generation Babur Cruise missile, with improved aerodynamics, indigenous engines and material modification. This is a truly modified weapon suited for naval service, and an evolution of the initial weapons that were based on found US Tomahawk. These weapons are now fully accepted in Naval service for sub-surface and surface warfare, and open various engagement options for Pakistan Navy, from conventional to other. You see a video with heavy frame editing so you cannot see the penetration, or guess the fusing system, which is highly classified. This particular weapon is designed to engage multiple sea and land targets with a conventional payload. Congratulations to NESCOM and Pakistan Navy on the demonstrated achievements, from designing of the FACM 3, to development of the indigenous command system, fire control system, data link system and multi-purpose multi-platform Navalized Cruise Missile. Hats Off.

the land tests are not public. The platform test validates the capability and delivers the message on weapon readiness.

Thank you Sir. I apologize for the late reply. I have been swamped with work lately.

I only attempt to verbally narrate what is being shown in the video. My intended audience us fellow Pakistanis and I want to encourage them to look deeper into things, rather than simply a superficial glance. Many times we don't even realize the sophistication of our own achievements, and the resulting discussion fails to properly acknowledge our indigenous efforts.

You are right about not being able to guess the warhead type and fuse. I merely tried to estimate the visible fireball. This might not be the full payload of the missile.

Hopefully, PN will get the opportunity to test it against realistic air defence systems to further fine tune the capability. Having mastered the delivery platform, evasion while maintaining precision should be the logical next step. This would involve RWR on the missile identifying enemy radar threats and attempting to navigate around them by avoiding their range altogether.

Babur was once successfully tested from Submarine & the target range was 1000 NM long ago
There is still not official news about naval version of babur yet . I believe it is still in development phase.
Regarding recent test , they didn't mention babur yet otherwise they always announce missile name like ababeel test, Shaheen missile test etc

They believe in conjectures but not the TRUTH, as per the KITAP. Pak's job is to generate the "conjectures" at a regular interval...

. . .
Add a few more missile boats of azmat class, add some 1000-1200 tonnage corvettes for anti submarine duty and now you got some defensive teeth for your coast.
