The idea was to allow Iran to spread influence and create resurgent Shia movements all over the ME, pushing KSA more closely into the US grip to stave off Shia expansionism.
Another goal was to create Sunni-Shia civil war in Iraq, Syria, and Yemen. They failed to do so in Lebanon and Bahrain for now.
This eased the pressure off of Israel and preoccupied the Arab countries in internecine warfare.
Both Iran, KSA are to blame for falling into Israeli,US designs and failing to stave off sectarianism.
Turkey, Pakistan, and Qatar resisted taking sides and foiled their plans to a large degree.
